The Utah Department of Health and Human Services Office of Substance Use and Mental Health is hiring a state suicide prevention coordinator. The OSUMH state suicide prevention coordinator will oversee the implementation of the departments suicide prevention program for the state of Utah. The person chosen will work closely with key stakeholders across the state to update and implement a state suicide prevention plan to address prevention intervention and postvention for suicide deaths in the state. They will coordinate with the Utah suicide prevention committee and coalition and provide oversight for the 7 work groups: faith workplace firearm youth and young adult LGBTQ Zero Suicide Collaborative and the Community Coalition.

They are responsible to coordinate/update the Utah Suicide Prevention State Plan every 5 years. This position will manage state suicide prevention grants budgets contracts and team members. They will provide suicide prevention vision and guidance to key stakeholders (e.g. education; substance use prevention treatment and recovery providers; child welfare; justice; military) as they address suicide deaths and suicidal behaviors. They will implement evidencebased upstream approaches to mental health promotion and suicide prevention programs for the State of Utah utilizing a public health approach. They will work with a contractor to produce the statewide suicide prevention media campaign Live On Utah and oversee content development strategic planning media coordination and training.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Experience required includes a minimum of a bachelors degree and five years working in administration or management of institutional activities or community programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word Excel PowerPoint Calendaring)
  • Although this position will not work directly with clients an understanding of clinical services for suicide prevention is integral to the skill set we are seeking.
  • Has work experience in the prevention field with knowledge of the Strategic Prevention Framework.
  • Has experience with suicide prevention intervention and postvention evidencebased programs and services.
  • Has experience managing grants contracts and budgets.
  • Has knowledge of and demonstrated ability to implement public health principles relevant to suicide prevention intervention and postvention efforts.
  • Has knowledge and experience with the state behavioral health system.
  • Has the ability to implement legislatively established programs.
  • Has the ability to relate to and effectively communicate with people from all economic racial age ethnic and social groups.
  • Has a strong desire to provide nonjudgmental appropriate assistance to persons in need or crisis.
  • Has the ability to effectively deal with complex issues.
  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff and service providers.
  • Has the ability to effectively motivate and train others.
  • Has demonstrated interest and/or skills in human services
  • Has strong oral and written English language skills
  • Has strong organizational skills

Note: as of April 8 2024 DHHS employees will be working a hybrid schedule which includes 2 office days per week and 3 telework days.
