PUBLIC LAND CORPS BOTANICAL INTERN
Student Worker


The position ofPublic Land Corps Botanical InternisOpen Until Filledso we can find the ideal candidates for our amazing team. There are five vacancies for this position. This position is grantfunded temporary and requires working outdoors for approximately 70 days starting in June.

As a Student Workerin the position ofPublic Land Corps Botanical Internyou will partner with the Umpqua National Forest to assist with the Forests invasive and rare plant species program. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a background in recreation management ecology natural resources conservation environmental education or a closely related field with an interest in advancing their career goals by further developing this dynamic program.

will be contributing to Umpqua National Forest restoration and sustainability goals via the Forests botanical program. This work includes mechanical treatment of invasive plants collection of native seed vegetating wetlands and protection of 5 species listed as threatened and endangered sensitive or survey and manage by conducting field surveys. The interns will gain skills related to the science of botany (plant surveying and ID monitoring) cross country navigation in forested environments map and aerial photo interpretation and standard field data collecting methods. The interns will also gain an understanding of National Forest policies and governmental regulations relating to natural resource management including the Northwest Forest Plan the National Environmental Planning Act and the Endangered Species Act. There may also be opportunities for interns to work with the wildlife hydrology or fisheries programs learning how the different disciplines collaborate to restore important habitat.

LOCATION:

  • Diamond Lake Ranger District Toketee Ranger Station
    1. This is a remote duty station located approximately 60 miles east on Hwy 138 from the nearest fullservice community of Roseburg OR. There are no services such as gas and groceries at this site only the Ranger Station and government housing. Please be prepared to live and work in this remote mountain setting.
  • Tiller Ranger District
    1. This location is located approximately 49 miles southwest of Roseburg OR. Again this is a remote duty location with no services such as gas and groceries at the site itself. Government housing may be available at this site.


QUALIFICATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:

  • UCC Student: Minimum of 6 credits at UCC in quarter either prior to or during internship.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Proficient in English
  • Must be 1825 years old 30 if you are a veteran)
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Personal reliable transportation is required as the duty station is considered remote
  • Members must possess a high fitness level and interest in hiking and camping with potential for backcountry work trips.
  • A valid drivers license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Ability to pass a basic written test and road test to obtain a US Government Motor Vehicle Operators Card
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check
  • The member must be willing to work well in a team of 78 other technicians and represent both UCC and the Forest Service in a professional positive and enthusiastic manner.
Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications:
  • Prior data collection plant ID and invasive plant removal experience is desirable
  • Experience and/or ability to learn usage of GPS/tablet units for mapping
  • Ability to take initiative work independently and participate in collaborative efforts
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with other resource professionals

LIVING ALLOWANCE: The member should anticipate serving 40 hrs./wk. and will receive a living allowance of $15.39 per hour plus fringe benefits such as included housing where available. Returning interns will be paid $17.27 per hour plus fringe.


HOUSING: Furnished housing will be provided if needed by the USFS in a typical bunkhouse setting.
