Assistant Director Plastics and Legislation

$120188 $.4 super

Canberra Hobart Brisbane and Coffs Harbour preferred; other AMSA locations will be considered.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Advisor Plastics and Legislation Environment Policy and Standards will manage legislative processes to ensure Australias domestic legislation implements international conventions relating to preventing environmental harm from shipping. The officer work across the organisation to ensure timely and effective implementation of legislative changes and support the executive through effective briefing.

You will be responsible for:

  • Lead processes to identify changes in international agreements regulations and guidelines and ensure that domestic legislation appropriately implements environmental protections adopted at the International Maritime Organization.
  • Contribute to the analysis and formulation of policy related to maritime environment protection issues and the preparation of documentation relating to the introduction of new and amending legislation and marine orders.
  • Develop Australias position and prepare briefing on key issues for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and Pollution Prevention and Response SubCommittee (PPR).
  • Research analyse and develop policy on environmental issues and regulatory responses both in Australia and internationally which contribute to the Action Plan to address marine plastic litter from ships.
  • Lead consultation with relevant stakeholders including arranging and participating in stakeholder meetings as necessary.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To besuccessful in this position you will have the following skills and experience:

  • understanding of international conventions legislation and policies relating to marine environment protection understanding of government legislative practices and processes or the ability to quickly gain this knowledge.
  • research and analysis skills including synthesising complex information to develop options or advice.
  • ability to prepare briefings and presentations on complex issues for high level meetings.
  • ability to work independently and collaboratively with others as part of a team and engage with stakeholders.
  • ability to work under pressure and deliver results to a high standard in a timely manner.
