About the division and team
AEMOs Forecasting Group within the System Design Division delivers long and medium term forecasts of Australias energy supply and demand. These forecasts underpin key planning publications including the Electricity Statement of Opportunities Gas Statement of Opportunities and the Integrated System Plan.
Within this group the Demand Forecasting team produces subregional and regional electricity demand forecasts for the National Electricity Market and the Wholesale Energy Market. The team focuses on medium to long term horizons spanning years to decades in contrast to operational forecasting which covers shorter timeframes from hours to days.
AEMO is expanding its team with a new Principal Data Scientist role contributing to a high-impact initiative shaping future energy outcomes. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the energy transition by helping to shape how demand-side solutions are identified understood and integrated into future system planning.
The position has the flexibility to be based out of any of our offices in Sydney (two locations CBD and Norwest) Melbourne Brisbane Perth Adelaide Hobart.
What you will be doing
The Principal Data Scientist leads the development review and communication of medium to long term electricity consumption forecasts including defining inputs and assumptions building and validating forecasting models and communicating methodologies and results.
Operating at the intersection of data modelling and energy system expertise the role focuses on building new models using large complex datasets combining strong analytical and data management capability with the ability to guide others communicate insights clearly and articulate a forward-looking modelling vision.
- Provide expert technical advice on forecasting methodologies including the application of statistical econometric dynamic/causal and machine learning approaches.
- Develop review and communicate model inputs and assumptions including economic demand energy end-use technologies and consumer behaviour trends.
- Design build and enhance energy forecasting models including techno-economic models end use technology stock models and consumer behaviour models.
- Work with large and complex datasets leveraging modern tools and platforms (e.g. Python Databricks) to support robust model development and analysis.
- Guide and influence modelling approaches balancing technical leadership with collaboration communication and stakeholder alignment.
- Build and maintain strong proactive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
