The Supervisor of Specimen Processing directly supervises a team of Specimen Processors to ensure the day-to-day receipt and processing of samples submitted to the laboratory is completed based on established procedures and production schedules.
Job Description
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Specimen Receiving department
- Ensure strict adherence to standard operation procedures regulatory requirements and company policies
- Perform department review of source data prior to release to the Quality department
- Ensure refrigerator freezer and instrument maintenance is completed in a timely manner
- Monitor and manage sample cancellations
- Ensure the department is maintained in a clean and organized manner including proper sample material and supply storage and that department supplies are within established inventory levels
- Maintain adequate department staffing and production work schedules employee timecards and time off requests
- Monitor staff performance train and/or mentor new employees perform competency assessments evaluate and counsel department personnel make recommendations regarding terminating promoting demoting of department personnel
- Conduct routine department staff meetings
- Interview prospective new hires and provide recommendations to management
- Communicate information regarding daily production instrument and LMS performance to management
- Track and trend sample shipment problems and provide end of month data to management
- Assist in the development of standard operating procedures and policies as they pertain to the department. Coordinate and implement the integration of new processes and procedures into the routine workflow.
- Assist with analyzing and resolving deviations root-cause analysis and CAPAs as necessary
- Document investigate communicate and resolve Specimen Receiving issues and sample reconciliation discrepancies
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High School diploma or GED
- 2 years of laboratory experience or 6 months laboratory experience with 1 year of supervisory experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelors or higher degree in Biology or Chemistry

- Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
- Must have analytical statistical personal organization and problem-solving skills.
- Must have proficient computer skills.
- Ability to think strategically and independently.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish priorities and follow through on projects paying close attention to detail with minimal supervision.
- Able to organize prioritize and execute a variable workload and multiple priorities.
- Ability to speak read and write in English
- Strong Organizational skills
- Must have the ability to apply rational thinking and understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions.
- Must possess the ability to deal with problems within the guidelines of standard operating procedures.
- Must have leadership skills and promote teamwork.
PHYSICAL & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Laboratory work environment
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance color peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic and caustic chemicals cold temperatures ( -20⁰C) and frequently to biological hazards.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- 5 hours per shift: Sitting Standing Handling. Finger dexterity Pinching
- 3- 5 hours per shift: Lifting to 30 pounds
- Up to 3 hours per shift: Walking Climbing bending squatting reaching above shoulders reaching waist to shoulder reaching knee to waist reaching floor to knee grasping items carrying/move items up to 30 pounds
