Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to provideadministrative support to the Disability Unit. The Disability unit is ahigh-volume unit with the task of properly administering disability responsibilities include assisting the Medical Board Secretary inestablishing new claims preparing claims to be reviewed by the Medical Boardand implementing actions relative to a members claim for disability retirementbenefits while the claim is being reviewed and after the process is completed.
An aspect of the mission of the Agency is to administerthe disability benefits to System participants. This position is a part of theadministration of disability benefits since it is part of the disabilityclaims process.
This position is responsible for reviewing claims toanalyze and identify if any additional information needs to be requested fromthe claimant the claimants employer or the claimants health care position is also responsible for notifying claimants of decisions made bythe Medical Board and Board of Trustees regarding the members claims. Thisposition also assists the Medical Board Secretary in preparing claims forreview by our Independent Medical Doctors. This requires organization of themedical file and communication with the Secretary and/or our physicians.
Thisposition requires a highly organized and detail orientated individual. Itrequires well developed oral and written communication skills. This position isresponsible for issuing decision letters made by the Medical Board and Board ofTrustees regarding a members disability claim. The position is responsible formailing estimates to claimants of their disability retirement benefits. Thisposition is responsible for closing claims and ensuring that all communicationsare reflected in the file.
POSITION DUTIES
Creates and mails disability letters to notify claimants of the Board of Trustees decision through tracking of Medical Boards and Board of Trustees decisions. Mails estimates to notify claimants of eligible benefit amounts through tracking of Medical Boards and Board of Trustees decisions as well as track estimates that are needed.
Creates and mails disability closing letters. Purges closed files and sends file to Office Services (after approval from the Disability Unit Supervisor) to be imaged.
Prepares and organizes medical records for review for our Independent Medical Evaluation physicians.
Ensures that all staff have access to the latest information on Board of Trustees decisions mailing of estimates and receipt of retirement application forms in the Disability Unit by posting information on both the paper disability file (actual claim) and on the case in CRM.
Respond to copy requests from attorneys and/or claimants including calculating the cost of copies and sending copies after receipt of payment
Other duties as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director of Special Projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:One year of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30college credit hours from an accredited college or university forthe required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that includedregular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans policies rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the requiredexperience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:
One year of demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office software including Word Outlook and Excel.
One year of experience reviewing and processing incoming applications including eligibility for benefits (e.g. retirement insurance health etc.).
One year of previous experience in the medical or legal fields evaluating workers compensation personal injury claims insurance or medical malpractice claims.
