POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The JHHS AVID Teacher / Literacy Specialist serves in a dual role supporting both college and career readiness instruction and schoolwide literacy improvement efforts. Half of the position includes teaching AVID elective courses focused on developing students writing inquiry collaboration organization and reading (WICOR) skills to increase academic readiness and student success in rigorous coursework.
The other half of the position supports the schools literacy systems by coordinating and assisting with universal screening progress monitoring literacy interventions and job-embedded professional learning related to adolescent literacy practices. The position collaborates closely with instructional staff AVID teams MTSS teams instructional facilitators counselors and administration to strengthen literacy outcomes support evidence-based instructional practices and ensure alignment with state literacy expectations and school improvement goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Teach AVID elective courses as scheduled using AVID instructional methodologies and curriculum resources.
- Implement and reinforce WICOR strategies within AVID instruction and support the implementation of these strategies across content areas.
- Develop students organization note-taking inquiry collaboration reading writing goal-setting and self-advocacy skills.
- Collaborate with counselors teachers and administration to support student access to rigorous coursework and postsecondary opportunities.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and AVID expectations.
- Work with AVID tutors and support effective tutorial processes within the AVID elective course.
- Participate in AVID PLC and professional learning. Contribute to schoolwide implementation of AVID strategies and instructional best practices.
- Advocate for equitable access student engagement and college and career readiness for all students.
- Support implementation of schoolwide literacy systems including universal screening progress monitoring and targeted literacy interventions for secondary students.
- Collaborate with teachers instructional staff and MTSS teams to identify students needing additional literacy support.
- Assist in developing and maintaining Individual Reading Plans (IRP) and intervention supports aligned to student literacy needs.
- Deliver individualized and small-group literacy interventions focused on comprehension vocabulary fluency writing and academic literacy skills. Use literacy assessment and progress-monitoring data to guide instructional decisions and intervention adjustments.
- Support teachers through job-embedded professional learning related to adolescent literacy practices intervention strategies and disciplinary literacy instruction.
- Collaborate with PLCs and instructional teams to align literacy supports with essential standards evidence-based grading practices and interventions.
- Maintain documentation related to literacy interventions student progress and support services.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts related to literacy instruction intervention systems and student support structures.
- Participate in ongoing professional development related to structured literacy adolescent literacy practices MTSS frameworks and state literacy requirements.
CERTIFICATIONS / QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree required; Masters degree literacy endorsement reading specialist endorsement or related advanced training preferred.
- Wyoming teaching certification required or the ability to obtain Wyoming certification through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards :// of AVID methodologies adolescent literacy practices MTSS frameworks evidence-based instructional strategies literacy assessment and intervention systems preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to use student performance and assessment data to inform instruction and monitor student growth.
- Experience teaching secondary students and/or providing literacy intervention support is preferred.
- Strong collaboration communication organization and relationship-building skills.
- Experience supporting professional learning instructional coaching or peer collaboration preferred.
- Commitment to promoting equitable access literacy growth student agency and college and career readiness.
The School District places employees on salary schedules on the basis of:
- Wyoming experience.
- Out-of-state experience up to 7 years.
- Degree ï½ Bachelors Masters or Doctorate.
- Semester Graduate Credits beyond Degree.
Salary pending approval of the 26/27 Compensation Package; 25/26 package can be foundhere.

Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person may need to lift arms to write on chalk or marking board and occasionally stoop kneel crouch and reach 0 - 24 inches and up to 36 inches above the head. The employee is directly responsible for the safety well-being and work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed materialthe ability to adjust focus and exposure to screen(s) via technology. Hearing ability to monitor activity and presence of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
