Job Summary

River Valley Community College - Hiring for full time - Biological Science / Lab Professor

Location: Claremont & Keene Campus

CCSNH has established employer status within the New England states (Maine New Hampshire Vermont Massachusetts Connecticut and Rhode Island). In compliance with CCSNH policies and state regulations eligibility for employment within CCSNH and its institutions requires residency within a New England state.

SCOPE OF WORK: Teach students in biological sciences as outlined in a prescribed program curriculum and assist in departmental initiatives and/or institutional activities that advance the mission of the college. Teaching responsibilities will include on-site instruction at the Keene Academic Center the Claremont campus or online instruction via Zoom and Canvas. Instructional assignments will include both day and evening courses. This position will also perform lab maintenance and lab preparation duties for all science courses in Keene and Claremont and shall report to the Department Chair of Liberal Arts at River Valley Community College.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Teaches assigned academic courses including but not limited to Anatomy & Physiology I & II in a lecture and laboratory setting as appropriate for the academic program.
  • Demonstrates teaching effectiveness through the development of instructional materials that comply with
  • established course content integrate theory with applications clearly define course goals observe program and institutional accreditation standards promote critical thinking and life skills.
  • Responds to the diverse academic needs of students.
  • Maintains accessibility and availability to assist students with their learning needs and advises individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercises professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel.
  • Supervises student learning activities and academic progress and maintains accurate records of student progress and accomplishments. Consults with and interprets these to students and maintains accessibility and availability to assist students with their learning needs.
  • Participates in departmental activities and operations by assisting in the review and development of credit and non-credit programs and/or courses maintaining educational equipment and spaces and requisitioning instructional equipment supplies or classroom materials.
  • Assists in the planning development and implementation of sponsored recruitment and retention
  • activities including career and job fairs student orientations registrations and award ceremonies and/or
  • advising student activity groups as assigned.
  • Engages in professional activities related to the area of biological science partnering the college with the wider community by serving on college or system teams or participating in community-sponsored events.
  • Remains technologically and pedagogically current within the biological sciences through participation in
  • relevant professional associations education and training activities.
  • Utilizes appropriate instructional and administrative technologies as required for teaching effectiveness and college operations/communications.
  • Plans implements and coordinates the daily operations of the three science labs in Claremont and the one science lab in Keene for all biological science and chemistry courses.
  • Sets up lab equipment specimens and materials in accordance with the course syllabi.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and proper disposal of biological and chemical waste.
  • Provides orientation to faculty staff and students in the use of the lab equipment and supplies.
  • Trains and coordinates the activities of part-time laboratory staff such as work-study students.
  • Maintains the inventory of supplies laboratory equipment chemicals and specimens.
  • Ensures equipment and instructional supplies are in good working order; may perform or oversee routine repairs and maintenance
  • Assists in budget development recommendations with department faculty
  • Observes all academic policies and procedures and institutional rules and regulations and demonstrates ethical and professional behavior.
  • Serves on college or system committees as assigned.
  • Complies with all college system state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Education: Masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major study in biology biomedical science molecular biology or a subject area closely related to the teaching assignment. Masters degree in education requires twelve (12) graduate credits in biological science or a subject area closely related to the teaching assignment and a bachelors degree in biological or chemical sciences.

Assistant Professor Experience: Three (3) years of teaching experience in biological sciences and experience working with waste disposal and lab safety protocols preparing lab materials for biological science and chemistry courses. Associate Professor: Five (5) years of teaching experience in biological sciences and experience working with waste disposal and lab safety protocols preparing lab materials for biological science and chemistry courses. Full Professor: Six (6) years of teaching experience in biological sciences two years of which include supervision of students or personnel in educational activities or academic program administration and experience working with waste disposal and lab safety protocols preparing lab materials for biological science and chemistry courses.

Desired Qualifications: Community college teaching experience in biology molecular biology microbiology and/or genetic courses within higher education. Knowledge of safety standards and procedures as applied to the science laboratory and industry. Experience in collaborative co-teaching environments online teaching curriculum development course equivalency evaluation and the creation of transfer agreements. Supervisory experience with lab technicians and work study students.

License/Certification: Drivers License or ability to travel within catchment area.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Thorough knowledge of teaching methods use of instructional materials and the organization of subject matter into effective teaching units in technology or other specialized programs. Complete knowledge of the principles methods techniques and equipment in subjects being taught. Ability to evaluate student progress and provide guidance to both students and instructors. Ability to supervise professional instructional staff and collaborate in development of programs policies and procedures. Ability to work effectively with businesses and community organizations. Ability to originate and implement new programs and to improve existing programs. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the college appointing authority
