The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports teaching and learning communities on campus through delivery of programs services and technologies to improve effectiveness of teaching and student outcomes in learning environments that reflect UBCs goals of equity inclusion and excellence. The CTL ensures compliance of educational programming with university policies governmental regulations and international governance; acts as a resource to the campus community; and provides pedagogical support to staff faculty and academic and non-academic units.
The CTL works with individual and groups of faculty members staff and students to support and promote teaching and learning excellence innovation and scholarship. The CTL provides workshops consultations (to individuals and groups) and programs focused on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning in the areas such as the scholarship of teaching and learning curriculum development flexible learning instructional design educational technology development instructional support and teaching practice development. The CTL also provides both pedagogical and technical support to a diverse suite of learning technologies including its learning technology ecosystem.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for operational leadership of the CTL: the Manager develops oversees and evaluates a broad range of educational and professional development programs initiatives and resources offered by the CTL in support of learning and teaching for faculty graduate students and staff. This position manages the CTL team and engages with staff faculty and academic and non-academic units on both UBC campuses as well as with external organizations. With the Academic Director CTL and Associate Provost Teaching and Learning the Manager plans the roadmap for the CTL balancing current and future states.
Organizational Status
The Manager CTL reports to the Associate Provost Teaching and Learning on a strategic basis and to the Academic Director CTL on an operational basis.
Work Performed
Manages the CTL staff including through oversight of core and specialized programming and services special projects and collaborations and engagements.
Implements the CTLs plans for professional development resource development and community engagement
Builds strategic relationships and alliances with partners in faculty support organizations academic service areas and technology providers in order to facilitate knowledge transfer best practice development and teaching and learning community development.
Liaises with UBC Vancouver (CTLT) UBC IT and UBC Okanagan campus departments and participates in relevant internal and external committees to foster develop and implement collaborative and complementary teaching and learning projects solutions and initiatives across campus and inter-institutionally. Manages the operational budget of the CTL in consultation with the Academic Director CTL and the Provosts Office
Using an agile approach works in partnership with academic leaders faculty members administrators and others to conduct needs assessments identify appropriate learning approaches promote effective teaching and learning strategies and improve student-learning outcomes in face-to-face hybrid multi-access and online learning environments. Consults with faculty as well as other internal and external stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of technology and learning environments (at the course and program levels). Explores researches and analyzes current models and best practices related to development and implementation of professional development models for learning technologies in higher education and makes recommendations for improvement and/or implementation.
Supports the exploration development implementation and sustainment of innovative teaching and learning strategies including emerging technologies for all classroom formats.
Performs other related duties as requested.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may have negative consequences for the quality of teaching and learning at UBC. They may also result in the inefficient use of resources and/or poor relations among educational developers staff or individuals participating in facilitated processes and/or educational development activities. They may damage the reputation of the University and the CTL.
Must respond to faculty/department requests in a timely and professional manner. Must exercise a high level of professionalism and judgment when dealing with various units and departments as well as with non-UBC colleagues. Failure to follow best practices and exercise sound judgment could result in significant resource and reputation costs to the Centre and could possibly have a negative impact on future internal and external partnerships.
Supervision Received
Works independently under general direction from the Associate Provost Teaching and Learning and the Academic Director CTL.
Supervision Given
Provides supervision to CTL staff and student employees (e.g. co-op students and graduate academic assistants) within the CTL. Responsible for hiring performance evaluation discipline and termination of these staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree in Education or related area. Minimum of seven years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of pedagogical theory and practice in instructional design and delivery change management principles and practices learning technologies and teaching modes.
Knowledge of a wide variety of learning technologies specifically UBCs learning technology ecosystem and the ability to learn new tools with ease.
Experience with developing and conducting effective professional development in a range of formats including face-to-face online and recorded.
Experience with the use of learning analytics to enhance teaching and learning environments.
Experience hiring training and supervising staff and student workers.
Experience working collaboratively within an academic community across disciplines.
Demonstrated project and time management skills.
Ability to solve problems by identifying and analyzing key information and issues.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment. Ability to work toward consensus and resolve differences.
Ability to analyze and interpret data determine implications and provide recommendations
