Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists isto perform responsible managerial administrative and professional engineeringwork in the Engineering Department. Theemployees primary responsibility is to furnish professional engineeringadvice assistance and service to employees and other departments in connectionwith the planning or executing of public works improvement programs. Supervision is exercised over professionaland sub-professional engineering personnel engaged in public works developmentand engineering design. The workresponsibilities are: supervises directs and evaluates assigned staff;assists in directing operation of the Engineering Department; assists in themanagement of the departments operating budget; provides technical expertiseto assist with the development and design of projects and other highlytechnical areas; and directs and oversees the design section. The employeewithin this classification reports directly to the City Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineeringsupplemented by seven (7) years of professional experience that includes publicworks infrastructure design management and supervision. Must possess andmaintain Professional Engineer registration in the State of Alabama. Mustpossess or be willing to obtain a Flood Plain Managers Certificate.

NOTE: Qualifying education training andexperience that provide the requisite knowledge skills and abilities toperform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver Licenseand an insurable driving records as needed to travel to various sites.

WORKING CONDITIONS:While performing the essential functions of thisjob the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hands fingers handle orfeel objects reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; lift and/or move up to10-25 pounds; ascend or descend ladders stairs and the like using feet andlegs or hands and arms; standing and is subject to work around moving equipment. Work is performedin an office environment and outdoors when inspecting work sites. Ability towithstand continuous exposure to moderately disagreeable conditions such as:exposure to fumes airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals and outdooratmospheric conditions. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability towithstand above average mental pressure.
