About the Role
The Litigation Services Managing Attorney is an integral part of Lathams Litigation Services role will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Southern California Litigation Services teams as a whole with a focus on providing legal and strategic guidance with respect to procedural matters developing judge and court analytics reviewing transcripts and prior judge precedent to identify relevant trends contextualizing layers of court rules with case law and secondary sources preparing procedural road maps for attorneys in advance of major filings reviewing documents for form and procedural compliance navigating complicated deadline calculations and providing ultimate oversight of the electronic and hard copy court submission process. This role will be located in our Los Angeles office in Century City. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Other key responsibilities include:
- Developing and supervising the Southern California Litigation Services teams and playing an active role in hiring assignment training and evaluation of the staff including making recommendations regarding salary and bonus administration overseeing department accounts approving expenses and preparing the budget
- Using Westlaw Lexis products (inlcuding Lexis AI CourtLink and Lex Machina) and other research platforms to provide high-level legal research and analysis with respect to procedural issues across many jurisdictions serving as a resource for strategic legal analysis relating to general litigation procedure and rule interpretation and remaining abreast of legal trends to ensure comprehensive and current guidance to attorneys and staff
- Demonstrating an advanced knowledge of applicable court rules and procedures and applying court rules in multiple jurisdictions quickly efficiently and in a manner that instills confidence and ensures risk management
- Developing a repository of judicial insight including reviewing transcripts to identify themes relevant to pending matters compiling case precedent recent decisions of interest reversal rates motion timing analytics and judicial biography with notable cases and lawyer interactions
- Preparing procedural road maps in advance of major court filings to flag applicable rules and requirements identifying areas of concern (such as preservation of confidentiality) offering relevant templates and precedent and streamlining collaboration with all team members (including attorneys Litigation Services and paralegals) in anticipation of upcoming submissions
- Ensuring that case deadlines are correctly calculated and calendared and overseeing and participating in court and agency filings in paper and electronic formats adhering to individual court and judicial procedures and ensuring that applicable deadlines are met
- Assisting in drafting reviewing and editing of court documents to ensure compliance with all layers of rule sets and standing orders
- Assisting in the development of Litigation templates and procedural checklists
- Serving as liaison between firm attorneys and court personnel exercising sound discretion in communications with chambers and court clerks
- Developing and presenting Continuing Legal Education sessions for attorneys and staff with an emphasis on court procedures and strategy
- Supervising service of subpoenas and the use of process servers retrieval and filing of court documents in paper and electronic form and research in court dock databases
- Protecting and maintaining any highly sensitive confidential privileged financial and/or proprietary information that Latham & Watkins retains
Wed love to hear from you if you:
- Display excellent oral and written communication skills
- Possess the ability to articulate complex court rules and calendaring issues in a comprehensible accurate confident and concise manner
- Demonstrate well-developed and professional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm
And have:
- A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Current bar admission in the state of the practice office or its main jurisdiction of litigation
- A minimum of seven (7) years of experience working in a Litigation Services role; in lieu of this a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a litigation associate and/or as a court employee may be considered
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity preferably
