Job Description Summary

Under the overall direction and supervision of the County Attorney an Assistant County Attorney III will assist in the fulfillment of the statutory obligations of the County Attorneys Office. Primary areas of focus will be providing legal services through advice and representation to the Board of Weld County Commissioners and Weld County departments or affiliated agencies including but not limited to Accounting Assessor Buildings and Grounds Extension Finance and Administration Clerk and Recorder Coroner Human Resources Health Human Services Justice Services Planning Public Works Purchasing Records Sheriff and Treasurer. The Assistant Attorney may appear in local State and Federal courts as well as administrative hearings as appropriate and perform all aspects of legal work associated with providing competent representation to the County and its departments.

Job Description

Legal Representation - 65%

  • Provide legal representation in court for and on behalf of Weld County in civil and regulatory matters as assigned. Specifically appearing on behalf of the County in mental health cases land use zoning violations and dog-at-large citations.
  • Appear in administrative level hearings representing departments in a variety of cases including but not limited to assistant payment collection unemployment claims and property tax appeals.
  • Perform research and analysis of legal sources such as statutes published judicial decisions legal articles treaties constitutions and administrative codes and rules.
  • Negotiate with persons and agencies in the private sector on legal issues pertaining to Weld County government.


Legal Advice - 30%

  • Attend meetings of the Weld County Board of Commissioners and provide legal advice and counsel regarding the matters considered and the conduct of the meeting as assigned.
  • Provide legal advice to the Board of Weld County Commissioners other Weld County elected officials and County Departments.
  • Prepare legal documents such as pleadings motions briefs appeals contracts leases and deeds.
  • Apprise County Officers regarding various legal issues related to statute ordinance policies and practice.
  • Draft and review proposed resolutions and ordinances for consideration by the Board of County Commissioners.
  • Assist in the development of administrative procedures for County departments and agencies.
  • Attend and participate in public meetings as requested and serve as a resource and legal voice for Weld County.


Other Duties as assigned - 5%

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the County Attorney.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • Juris Doctorate and 2 years practicing law


Preferred Experience

  • 3 years experience practicing civil legal representation.
  • Experience providing legal representation for a government agency.


Skills and Abilities

  • Candidate must possess strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Candidate must possess sufficient computer skills to perform essential job functions.
  • Candidate must possess the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the client fellow employees and colleagues opposing counsel and the court.
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.


Licenses and Certifications

  • Bar Admission State of Colorado Upon Hire Required
  • Driving is essential in this position.
  • Must have a valid Colorado State Drivers License by the employment start date and must maintain a valid Drivers License for the duration of employment. Upon Hire Required

  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.


This position is exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore ineligible for overtime pay.
