Community Support Worker

Area of Responsibility:
The Urban Aboriginal Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Program provides culturally appropriate wholistic prevention and intervention support to urban Indigenous individuals and families impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The Community Support Worker is responsible for providing service coordination diagnostic navigation group support activities educational workshops and FASD prevention awareness events advocacy service referrals and one to one life skills support.
Qualifications:
- Preferred diploma or degree in Social Work and/or equivalent work
- Knowledge and experience in the following areas: FASD addictions child development nutrition and health.
- Knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history and working with Indigenous persons; understanding of the northern cultural environment; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an
- Knowledge of relevant legislation policies and procedures to ensure that children and youth are supervised and safe at all
- Ability to plan coordinate and deliver educational workshops and inclusive programming relating to FASD awareness nutrition and prevention to community groups.
- Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; exceptional verbal and listening communication skills; excellent interviewing and counselling skills.
- Excellent case and file management skills stress management and ability to meet
- Group facilitation team building and decision-making skills; ability to problem solve and take
- Self- motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented
- Effective crisis intervention skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and/or
- Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers Licence and the use of a vehicle. Will require a valid Drivers Abstract upon hiring.
- A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of the employment offer.
