Description:
The GIS Technician supports engineering operations and document control functions by maintaining accurate GIS records preparing design drawings and performing spatial analyses. This role ensures the integrity of mapping data supports utility infrastructure projects and collaborates with internal teams and external partners to meet operational and project goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Verify maintain and update GIS records to ensure accuracy completeness and consistency.
- Enter proposed pipe and utility infrastructure data into the GIS mapping system.
- Assist with corrections and updates in the GIS database.
- Create new map data through digitization or direct coordinate input applying cartographic principles such as coordinate systems longitude latitude elevation topography and map scales.
- Perform basic GIS spatial and data queries analysis and generate reports from the GIS system.
- Analyze historical data utility records and related documentation to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare design drawings for main extensions and replacement projects.
- Gather compile and organize engineering data for use in planning design and analysis.
- Prepare simple right-of-way descriptions using property plats and survey data.
- Develop right-of-way exhibits to support engineering and permitting requirements.
- Collaborate with external partners such as contractors utilities and regulatory agencies to ensure effective communication and coordination.
- Support operational workflows involving GIS and document control to meet project deadlines and operational needs.
- Assist in troubleshooting GIS system issues and document control process challenges.
- Manage multiple tasks and changing priorities while maintaining accuracy and meeting timelines.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 13 years of GIS-related experience (entry-level acceptable).
- Basic understanding of GIS concepts and mapping principles.
- Strong analytical problem-solving and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred:
- Experience in a utility municipal or local government environment.
- Prior experience using ArcGIS Pro.
- GPS surveying or CAD design experience.
- GIS certification associates or bachelors degree in GIS geography engineering or a related field.
