Position Overview

The General Education Paraprofessional assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing STEM2 instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment in order to continuously improve student achievement. The General Education Paraprofessional also assists in the preparation of instructional materials implementation of lesson plans and helps create and implement Behavior Intervention plans. All duties are performed under the professional guidance and supervision of a certified teacher. Non-instructional (clerical) duties may be assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Works with students individually or in small groups to reinforce and re-teach basic learning concepts.
  2. Assists and guides students to reinforce reading language arts mathematics science computer instruction and other skills.
  3. Assists in classroom preparations instructional materials and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  4. Assists teachers in the administration and correction of classroom practice activities tests and projects.
  5. Provides extra assistance to students with exceptionalities such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical and/or mental disabilities and 504 Plans.
  6. Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  7. Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions ensure a safe and orderly classroom and ensure students are on task.
  8. Assists with fostering independence socialization and self-esteem for all students.
  9. Assists teacher with parent contact as requested to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
  10. Assists all students in non-instructional areas such as supervising the student lunch programs bus duty playground duty corridors gymnasiums and other related non-instructional areas.
  11. Assist with student enrichment activities including field trips art music drama and recreation.
  12. Assist with the inventory and maintenance of classroom equipment and supplies.
  13. Monitor and assist with transporting students to and from school and on field trips.
  14. Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.
  15. Maintain schedule established by supervising teacher.
  16. Work effectively with general and special education teachers.
  17. Assist with student testing administration and scoring.
  18. Assist classroom teacher with general clean-up and preparation.
  19. Participate in annual program district and state assessments.
  20. Participates in professional learning activities staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
  21. Assists with bulletin boards and decorations for instructional purposes and for special events.
  22. Serves as a source of information and assists any substitute teacher assigned to the class.
  23. Communicates clearly and positively with students and all stakeholders.
  24. Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students employees or others in the school environment and community.
  25. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment as assigned by the School Principal and/or District Administration.

Licenses or Certifications

  • An Associates degree or 60 hours of college credits or a passing score on a paraprofessional test is required
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate preferred
  • A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required
  • Substitute Certificate preferred

Experience

  • Experience working with an ethnically diverse urban population preferred
  • Experience working with minority and ELL students preferred

Skills Knowledge & Abilities

  • Bilingual English and Spanish.
  • Ability to relate to the needs of low-income families.
  • Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with students teachers parents and administrators.
  • Willingness to pursue additional training in job-related areas.
  • Ability to bend carry and lift 40 pounds kneels push and pull 25 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress punctuality and attendance.
  • Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others.

Working Environment

  • The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud but is usually moderate.
  • The playground setting can include exposure to dirt dust and extreme seasonal temperatures.
  • Performing the job duties of this position requires the following physical demands: reaching some lifting standing walking carrying bending stooping kneeling crouching sitting and/or crawling.
  • The employee may encounter situations where students are physically aggressive and verbally abusive. This may require physical interaction between the employee and student.
