Job Summary

POSITION TITLE: Senior Specialist Department of Safety Services

REPORTS TO: Chief/Deputy Chief of the Department of Safety Services

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Chief/Deputy Chief of the Department of Safety Services the Senior Specialist will serve as a proactive member of the leadership team and will be assigned as a building-based supervisor or a Mobile Unit supervisor. The Senior Specialist will assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment in school buildings and grounds in collaboration with school safety teams and administrators. The Senior Specialist will work with Safety Specialists staff members school leaders and staff and internal and external partners proactively to ensure that all established safety protocols are being followed consistently and will exercise appropriate safety and law enforcement procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Takes appropriate action in the event of a disturbance or incident as directed by the Principal Headmaster or the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services in accordance with the building safety plan and Department of Safety Services protocols and procedures.
  2. Observes and reports any potential problem in school buildings and grounds taking appropriate action as necessary.
  3. Submits written reports as required by the Department of Safety Services.
  4. Conducts routine proactive site visits to schools as determined by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services to conduct safety walk-throughs communicate with school administrators and support the proper implementation of all safety services.
  5. Serves on an emergency school support team as directed by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services.
  6. Investigates incidents as directed.
  7. Assists in supervision of student movement in and out of school buildings and grounds including school parking areas in the school yard before school at recess at dismissal and when students are boarding or leaving buses.
  8. Provides technical assistance in areas of safety and security to school administrators.
  9. Assists School Department personnel students and parents with the court process.
  10. Successfully completes all professional development and training programs asrequired by the Department of Safety Services.
  11. If assigned as a Mobile Unit conduct school site visits to promote proactive communication between Safety Specialists school leaders safety teams and staff.
  12. Establish and maintain a positive and productive relationship with all BPD School Unit officers and work collaboratively on all incidents and prevention/intervention strategies to promote school safety across the district.
  13. Conduct field supervision of Safety Specialists.
  14. Complete appropriate evaluations of Safety Specialists as directed by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Current BPS employee of the Department of Safety Services possessing a rank of Safety Specialists in good standing with the Department.
  • Three years experience as a former Patrol Officer and or Safety Specialist with the Department of Safety Services.
  • Knowledge of the Boston Public Schools policies procedures practices and neighborhoods.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States (candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment).
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts Drivers license and acceptable driving record
  • Access to a motor vehicle on all workdays

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual.
  • Associates or Bachelors Degree or working towards obtaining a degree.

Terms:

  • Union: SchoolSuperior Officers

  • Compensation: Hourly rate based on the School Superior Officers pay scale

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
