Job Summary

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) graduate program in Creative Writing is seeking an Administrative Services Manager Academic Programs and Operations

In close collaboration with the program director this role works to develop and implement the programs and processes required to support the teaching research and service essential to the graduate program in Creative Writing known informally as the Iowa Writers Workshop Serving as departmental administrator this role plans organizes and leads the administrative operational functions and day-to-day activities for the Writers Workshop within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Key responsibilities include academic support program support budget analysis accounting and facilities management. These functions require an understanding of University policies and operations and the ability to continuously implement and optimize new systems. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential for effectively engaging with various campus units students donors and alumni of this top-level program. This position requires a high level of independent judgement discretion and the ability to manage highly confidential information. Strategic planning skills are essential for success in this role

This position may beeligible forhybridwork within Iowa after onboarding is complete and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with theremote work program and related policiesandemployee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead administrative operational functions and day-to-day activities for the Writers Workshop including operational oversight of Dey House.
  • Provide academic operational leadership for the Writers Workshop graduate program and undergraduate offerings through the academic year cycle.
  • Supervise Dey House staff and staffing ensure smooth operations of the department in support of faculty students visiting faculty visiting public fundraising and other department initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Director of Writers Workshop to facilitate and oversee strategic planning efforts incorporating budget capital equipment program funding academic administrative and research support services faculty research and administrative space needs program goals outreach and recruitment and compliance.
  • Supervise and develop administrative staff and student employees including the Writers Workshop Librarian position.
  • Collaborate with CLAS human resources team on matters specifically for Writers Workshop including faculty and staff searches yearly graduate student and visiting faculty appointments and temporary staff appointments for periodic needs such as admissions. Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all contracts and terminations.

Education Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration or Liberal Arts or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a managerial or administrative capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience of software applications such as Microsoft Office Excel Outlook and electronic calendaring.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading motivating evaluating and rewarding personnel including supervision of permanent staff members.
  • Demonstrates extensive experience in leading motivating evaluating and rewarding personnel including supervision of permanent staff members.
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge and application of oral and written communication techniques and relationship building skills that develop the ability to clearly communicate and work with individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge and demonstrated interest in contemporary literature and literary culture.
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Working knowledge and ability to utilize tools techniques and processes for gathering and reporting data.
  • Working knowledge of University systems such as Workflow and MAUI.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.
