THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL EXAM - YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY

Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service by Friday April 10 2026. A regular appointment does not include provisional TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool) or STEP-UP appointments.

DESCRIPTION



THE POSITION
The Division Commander is a senior management command position with responsibility for all operations of an assigned division. The positions report directly to an Assistant Sheriff.Under administrative supervision and direction Division Commanders direct the daily operation of a major division of the Sheriffs Office (Law Enforcement Services Detention and Corrections Management Services County Wide Services Dublin Police Services and Airport Police Services; and to do related work as required.

The Division Commander may be assigned to assume the duties of an Assistant Sheriff in his/her absence. The position of Division Commander differs from the next higher class of Assistant Sheriff by the latter having agency-wide responsibility for operational or administrative and management services; and differs from the next lower class of Captain by the latter having assigned responsibility for the administration of an organizational unit or facility within a division under the direction of a Division Commander.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Captain in the Alameda County Sheriffs Department.

Desirable Qualification:

Possession of a California Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training Advanced and Management Certificate.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

Federal and California State Codes and Administrative Regulations County Ordinances legal memoranda and other rules pertinent to work.
Principles techniques and practices of modern law enforcement.
Personnel administration and current labor relations practices.
California Criminal Justice system including inter-agency relationships of components.
Sociological environmental and economic factors bearing on criminal conduct and delinquency.
Modern Principles of penology correctional and rehabilitation practices and programs; administration organization and management of diversified correctional institutions.
Community organizations and resources disaster and emergency services planning and preparedness programs and organizational concepts of animal care and control fish and game services and firefighting techniques.
Mutual aid procedures and emergency planning.
Public Relations and public information principles and techniques.
Administrative and budgetary analysis.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1) A review of applications and supplemental questionnaires to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those applicants who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
2) An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the applicants final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

Veterans Preference
Each applicant entitled to veterans preference as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules who has served in the armed forces of the United States during a war or campaign as defined by Section 1897 of the Government Code of the State of California and who has been discharged or released under honorable conditions and wishes to claim such preference shall do so by presenting proof of his/her honorable discharge (DD214) from the armed forces of the United States showing the dates of his/her military service. Each applicant entitled to Disabled Veterans points as provided in the Alameda County Civil Service Rules who wishes to claim such preference shall additionally present proof of military-connected disability from the United States Veterans Administration.

U.S. military veterans (including applicants already employed by the County of Alameda) intending to claim preferential consideration pursuant to Alameda County Civil Service Rules must present proof of honorable discharge or release (DD Form 214) concurrent with this application but in no event later than the final step in the recruitment process (usually the oral interview.)

To claim veterans preference proof must be presented during check in on the date of the applicants scheduled oral interview. Failure to submit proof by this date will forfeit the applicants claim to veterans preference in such examination.

Candidates will be required to presenta valid photoI.D. for admittance to each phase of the examination i.e. drivers license military I.D. Passport or California Department of Motor Vehicles I.D. card.
