| POSITION SUMMARY |
Under the general direction of the Principal or designee the High School Science Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in science. The teacher fosters scientific inquiry critical thinking and problem-solving skills while creating a safe inclusive and engaging learning environment for students. This role contributes to student success academically and socially by promoting scientific literacy real-world application of scientific concepts and adherence to School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws. The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can: - Deliver standards-based science instruction aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Promote student understanding of scientific concepts inquiry and laboratory practices.
- Maintain a safe supportive and inclusive classroom and laboratory environment.
- Prepare students to think critically analyze data and apply scientific reasoning.
- Support the divisions mission to serve every child every day.

| ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate science lessons aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Teach a range of high school science courses which may include Biology Chemistry Physics Earth Science or other courses as assigned.
- Incorporate laboratory investigations experiments and hands-on learning experiences to support scientific understanding.
- Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments; use results to adjust instruction.
- Ensure proper use storage and maintenance of laboratory equipment and materials.
- Enforce safety procedures and guidelines during all laboratory and classroom activities.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic needs of students.
- Integrate technology and real-world applications to enhance student understanding of scientific concepts.
- Maintain accurate student records including attendance grades and lab documentation.
- Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum share best practices and support student achievement.
- Communicate effectively with students families and staff regarding student progress and expectations.
- Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and improve instructional practices.
- Ensure compliance with school policies state standards and laboratory safety regulations.

| EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE |
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with Science endorsement (Biology Chemistry Physics or related field).
- Experience teaching high school-aged students is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of science curriculum laboratory practices and instructional best practices.
- Strong communication collaboration and organizational skills.

- Supervises students in the classroom and during laboratory and instructional activities.
- Provides direction and guidance to instructional assistants volunteers or student teachers as assigned.
- Monitors student adherence to laboratory safety rules and proper handling of equipment and materials.

| TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS |
- Reliable transportation is necessary
- Daily travel between schools LCS buildings and local areas may be required for professional development
- Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg is required

| WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS |
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work may involve collaborative support across academic programs student services and operational functions and requires frequent standing sitting walking light lifting (up to 10 pounds) vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing reviewing and analyzing written or electronic data.
