Job Summary

A leading civil engineering firm is seeking a mid-level Water Resources Engineer to join its Herndon Virginia office. This role is ideal for an engineer with 410 years of experience in water resources design and modeling who is looking to contribute to impactful infrastructure and transportation projects across Virginia.

The selected candidate will play a key role in stormwater management drainage design hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and erosion and sediment control design. This position works within a multi-disciplinary engineering team that supports major transportation and municipal infrastructure projects throughout the region.

The engineer will contribute to design development technical analysis and project coordination while also mentoring junior engineers and supporting the continued growth of the Water Resources discipline within the office.

Requirements

Engineering Design

  • Develop drainage and stormwater management designs in accordance with project specifications and regulatory guidelines.

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using industry-standard software.

  • Design erosion and sediment control plans for transportation and municipal projects.

  • Analyze survey reports maps aerial photography and geospatial data to support project planning.

Technical Analysis

  • Conduct watershed studies and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis.

  • Perform modeling using software such as HEC-RAS HY-8 HydroCAD PCSWMM and TR-55/TR-20 methodologies.

  • Develop engineering solutions compliant with Virginia stormwater regulations.

Project Coordination

  • Assist in preparation of engineering reports plans specifications cost estimates and technical documentation.

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams on transportation and infrastructure projects.

  • Coordinate with contractors consultants and government agencies.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff.

  • Assist with construction-phase engineering support.

  • Manage time effectively across multiple concurrent engineering projects.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering with a focus in Water Resources from an ABET-accredited program.

Experience

  • 410 years of Water Resources engineering experience

  • Experience working with local and state government clients

Licensing

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

Technical Expertise

  • Hydrologic modeling using TR-55 TR-20 and Rational Method

  • Hydraulic modeling using HEC-RAS HY-8 HydroCAD or similar tools

  • Stormwater management and drainage design

  • Erosion and sediment control design

Software

  • MicroStation OpenRoads Designer

  • Experience with VDOT standards and Locally Administered Projects (LAP)

  • Experience using GIS software

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment (approximately 60%).

  • Some field work is required including occasional outdoor site visits in various weather conditions.

  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds during field assignments.

Key Responsibilities Lead bridge inspection teams and coordinate personnel equipment and field operations Prepare in-office support documentation for upcoming inspections Conduct field inspections including measurements condition assessments and documentation of structural findings Evaluate structural conditions and identify deficiencies or safety concerns Prepare detailed technical bridge inspection reports in accordance with NYSDOT standards Perform structural calculations including load ratings and structural analysis Develop repair recommendations and construction documentation for flagged conditions requiring immediate or interim repair Ensure inspection activities comply with federal and state bridge inspection standards Coordinate effectively between field teams engineers and project stakeholders Required Qualifications Candidates must meet the following requirements: Minimum 3 years of bridge engineering experience in design inspection construction or related bridge engineering work Active drivers license and ability to travel to field inspection locations New York State Professional Engineer (PE) License or ability to obtain within one month of employment Candidates must also have completed at least one of the following: FHWA/NHI Course #130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (2-week course) FHWA/NHI Course #130056 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges for Professional Engineers (1-week course) NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Certification Preferred Experience Experience leading bridge inspection teams Experience performing bridge load ratings and structural evaluations Familiarity with NYSDOT bridge inspection standards and specifications Experience preparing engineering reports and repair recommendations Knowledge of bridge inspection and analysis software platforms Working Conditions This position involves significant fieldwork and physical activity. Candidates must be comfortable working in varying outdoor conditions and performing physical tasks such as: Bending kneeling and standing for extended periods Lifting and carrying materials up to 50 lbs Working in environments including heat cold humidity and wet conditions
