Primary Purpose:
Adapt teaching and activities to the specific strengths and limitations of students with disabilities who cannot fully participate in their general physical education setting or who need accommodations and modifications for successful participation in a general PE program. Work in self-contained team departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned.
Education/Certification:
Bachelors degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education and physical education endorsements for assignments
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
- Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
- Skills and knowledge in providing physical education to students with disabilities
- Knowledge of APE - As set by Texas certification standards (State Board for Educator Certification)
Experience
A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience
Essential Job Functions:
- Follow policies procedures and operating guidelines relating to the selection and administration of reliable and valid assessment instruments.
- Administer assessment instruments to identify developmental levels strengths and limitations for individualized education goals and activities appropriate to students developmental levels and interests.
- Assist in determining the need for adapted physical education through appropriate assessment.
- Provide consultation to general physical education and special education staff on methods to modify activities to meet the needs of students who qualify for adapted physical education
- Complete full individual evaluations (FIE) for APE.
- Review/complete APE observation reports.
- Participate actively as part of the evaluation team and ARD meetings for students eligible for adapted physical education.
- Develop appropriate IEP goals and objectives for students eligible for adapted physical education.
- Provide direct and/or consultative adapted physical education services to students.
- Assist in developing instructional programs for eligible students
- Complete local state and federal paperwork required for program participation.
- Assist with the FITNESSGRAM at campuses for students in special education.
- Communicate with campus staff and parents the progress concerns and information related to students as needed for their IEP. Maintain a record of district travel and complete appropriate forms and documentation within the timeline.
- Serve as District Special Olympics Coach with associated responsibilities
- Performs other duties as assigned.

The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position which may cause significant stress.
