Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Engage in the education training and supervision of faculty residents medical students in JABSOM clinical departments.
  2. Position serves as an Assistant Designated Institutional Official (DIO) within the JABSOM Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Office in the Office of the DIO (ODIO) supporting the DIO in all matters related to Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs at JABSOM and all JABSOM-affiliated clinical teaching sites. Reports to the DIO with secondary reporting to the Deputy DIO.
  3. Serve as a primary contact of ODIO with GME program administrators.
  4. Maintain a strong effective proactive and collaborative team-based relationship with HRP leadership.
  5. Work withhealth system leadersdepartment chairs program directors and program administrators to monitor and enhance the quality of GME programs including but not limited to the following:
    1. Faculty professional development (professionalism Title IX/VII teaching/evaluation skills etc.) with implementation strategies specific to the resources and capacity of the major clinical training sites;
    2. GME research/patient quality & safety initiatives including those specific to the health system that employs the majority of core program faculty and/or that serves as the primary clinical training site for the GME program;
    3. GME faculty staff and trainee well-being;
    4. Proposals for program expansion; and
    5. Compliance with ACGME LCME UH hospital (e.g. Joint Commission) and Hawaii Residency Program (HRP) policies and/or processes.
  6. Participateand assistinleadingGME enterprise-wide activities or initiatives to support overall GME excellence including but not limited to the following:
    1. GMEC meetings Annual Institutional Reviews HRPboard meetings HRP program administrator meetings;
    2. Annual state-wide GME training programs for DIOs Program Directors Program Administrators and chief residents;
    3. Follow-up of personnel issues including external review of GME trainee academic performance for selected residents who are underperforming providing guidance on remediation plans for GME trainees GME trainee grievances informal complaints and Title VII/IX complaints as directed by DIO;
    4. Enhancement of GME trainee recruitment/retention across programs; and
    5. Assist in the refinement of proposals for new GME programs.
  7. Assist in preparation and/or oversight of program and institutional reports to the GMEC ACGME and other stakeholders including:
    1. Programs and the Sponsoring Institutions Annual Updates and response to citations in the ACGME Accreditation Data System;
    2. Annual Institutional Review;
    3. Self-study reports Special Reviews and site visits; and
    4. Institutional policies and guidelines.
  8. Work with leaders at the health systems department chairs and program directors to develop and promote system-wide and cross-institution initiatives and processes including:
    1. Faculty development forteaching skills; and
    2. Optimizing the Clinical Learning Environment (via CLER Pathways to Excellence).
  9. Support and mentor select faculty fellows and residents to optimize GME processes (e.g. resident and program evaluation) in the program.
  10. Prepare faculty fellows and residents for educational leadership positions.
  11. Develop research and/or quality projects or initiatives in education or health system science.
  12. Serve on University Committees.
  13. Conduct scholarly activity and research.
  14. Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing.
  • Four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates not applying from the Assistant Professor rank should have seven (7) years or more of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution
  • Eligible for unrestricted Hawaii Medical License at time of hire.
  • Board certification or Maintenance of Board Certification is required for candidates with an MD degree.
  • Evidence of effective medical education activities scholarly/research activity educational or clinical administration is required.
  • Scholarly/research or administrative activity may be in areas affecting health patient care or methods and techniques of medical education.
  • Evidence of the generation of new knowledge in clinical care care processes or medical education is of significant importance in improving the quality and effectiveness of the primary teaching function of any medical school.
  • Timely publication of results in peer-reviewed venues (i.e. journals online collaboratives/portals local or national conferences) that include at least co-authorship of publications together with sufficient independent or group research/scholarship activity to justify the reasonable expectation that the applicant will develop into an effective and productive scholar.
  • Demonstrated medical education administrative activities that involve curriculum development and oversight involved with the development of course work for medical students and/or residents/fellows.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in developing administrative or educational synergies between divisions or programs within a clinical department
  • Leadership of a curricular component of a GME program (i.e. a series workshops longitudinal curriculum)
  • Participation in a core committee within a GME program (i.e. curriculum committee program evaluation committee clinical competency committee academic half-day or research committee)
  • Experience serving in prior GME or Department leadership roles such as Program Director Associate Program Director Department Chair or Vice Chair
  • Experience in developing administrative partnerships and relationships between GME programs/clinical departments and/or medical education institutions including health systems or hospitals.
  • Advanced study in medical education.
