Job Summary

Senior Technical Manager (holding the functional title of Senior Sport and Recreation Manager) in the Centre for Sports and Exercise (Ref.: 534457)

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is looking for an inspiring strategic and dynamic leader to champion the development of sport and physical activity across the University community in the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE).

The CSE is dedicated to fostering a vibrant culture of sports wellness and community at HKU. We manage world-class facilities like the Stanley Ho Sports Centre and deliver comprehensive programmes that serve students staff alumni and the wider community supporting the Universitys commitment to holistic education and excellence.

The Role

Reporting to the CSE Director this senior role carries the responsibility for setting the long-term vision and strategic direction for all sports development recreational programming and athlete support at HKU. The appointee will lead the effort to elevate our sporting culture enhance competitive excellence and ensure our programmes are inclusive innovative and integrated into the student experience. The appointee will also provide strategic leadership to the sports development team moving beyond programme management to shape policy and legacy.

Key Responsibilities

Formulate and lead the CSEs overarching sports and recreation strategy setting long-term goals for participation performance and community engagement;

Provide strategic leadership and direction to the sports development team fostering a high-performance culture that supports both elite athletes and broad-based participation;

Develop and implement a visionary framework for University Sports Teams athlete scholarship schemes and high-performance support ensuring alignment with top-tier university sports standards;

Drive innovation in sports programme design leveraging technology (e.g. AI data analytics) and evidence-based practice to enhance coaching training and participant outcomes;

Forge and manage high-level strategic partnerships with key external bodies such as The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong China national sports associations and community organizations;

Oversee major sports event strategy and policy positioning HKU as a premier host for significant competitions and inclusive campus sporting events;

Champion sports as a key pillar of student life and alumni connection working collaboratively across the University to embed a vibrant lifelong sports culture;

Contribute to resource development and fundraising initiatives specifically for sports programmes and facilities.

Qualifications and Qualities

A good postgraduate degree preferably at the Masters level or above in Sports Management Exercise Science Education or a related field;

Not less than 10 years proven experience in strategic sports development and leadership with a significant portion gained in a university high-performance or major sports organization context;

A distinguished track record of designing and executing long-term sports strategies that have increased participation improved competitive results and enhanced programme quality;

Strong leadership and visionary skills with the ability to inspire coaches staff students and stakeholders towards a common strategic goal;

Deep understanding of athlete development pathways sports science support and the governance of university sports;

Excellent networking communication and presentation skills with fluency in written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese is generally essential while Putonghua is an advantage);

A proactive dynamic and collaborative approach with a passion for using sport as a tool for education and community building.

What We Offer

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
