Job Summary

The General Sales Manager (GSM) is responsible for overseeing all sales operations within the dealership including new and used vehicle sales sales team performance customer experience and profitability. The GSM develops and implements processes that drive consistent growth increased market share and improved gross profit while maintaining a high standard of customer satisfaction. This role is critical in building a scalable sales operation that supports long-term dealership growth.

Key Responsibilities

Sales Leadership & Performance

  • Lead coach and develop the sales team to consistently achieve and exceed monthly sales targets.
  • Manage daily sales operations including desk deals inventory management and pricing strategy.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as units sold gross profit closing ratios and sales productivity.
  • Conduct daily sales meetings and ongoing training to improve sales skills and process execution.

Process & Accountability

  • Establish and enforce a structured sales process from lead generation to vehicle delivery.
  • Ensure CRM usage lead follow-up and appointment setting standards are consistently maintained.
  • Hold sales staff accountable to daily activity metrics including calls appointments and showroom traffic.
  • Maintain strong communication between sales finance and service departments.

Inventory & Merchandising

  • Oversee inventory acquisition pricing and aging strategies for both new and used vehicles.
  • Work closely with the used car manager or buyer to maintain the right mix of vehicles for the market.
  • Ensure online listings photos and VDPs are optimized to drive digital leads and showroom traffic.

Financial Performance

  • Maximize front-end gross profit while maintaining competitive pricing in the market.
  • Work with the finance department to improve product penetration and total dealership profitability.
  • Manage expenses and compensation plans to align with dealership profitability goals.

Customer Experience

  • Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction throughout the buying process.
  • Resolve escalated customer issues professionally and efficiently.
  • Maintain dealership reputation through positive online reviews and community engagement.

Growth & Strategy

  • Develop and execute strategies to increase sales volume and market share.
  • Identify opportunities to expand marketing reach and lead generation.
  • Build a strong sales culture that supports the dealerships long-term growth objectives.

Qualifications

  • 5 years of automotive sales leadership experience (Sales Manager or GSM preferred).
  • Proven track record of achieving sales targets and improving dealership profitability.
  • Strong leadership coaching and team development skills.
  • Deep understanding of CRM systems digital marketing and modern dealership sales processes.
  • Excellent communication negotiation and problem-solving abilities.

  • Monthly vehicle sales volume
  • Front-end gross profit per unit
  • Closing ratio and appointment show rate
  • Inventory turn and aging
  • Customer satisfaction scores (CSI)
  • Sales team productivity and retention
