Job Summary: This position directs and manages special education programming develops and monitors budgets; maintains positive staff relationships; maintains compliance with state regulations and reporting practices; manages staffing and programming decisions; and provides direct support and assistance to building administrators.

Duties and Responsibilities:This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the Superintendent Executive Director of Special Education and employees involved.

  1. Works with principals and special education staff to improve instructional programs.
  2. Serves as adjunct member of building guidance team and evaluation team processes; assists in determining student eligibility; and assures programs are aligned with district standards.
  3. Supervises student placements contractual agreements and agency-related services.
  4. Provides legal interpretations regarding state and federal disability mandates.
  5. Supervises and evaluates the work of all assigned personnel.
  6. Monitors program budget; monitors IEP processes maintains accurate program records; assists in preparation of local state and federal reports.
  7. Works with various special education advisory committees to identify current and future program needs.
  8. Collaboratively develops department goals monitors progress and implements professional development and other strategic plans to improve student performance.
  9. Provides on-site building support for special education programs.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationship:Reports to the Executive Director of Special Education

Working Conditions: Works in an office environment; maintains confidential information; required to meet inflexible deadlines; experiences interruptions from telephone and office visitors; required to deal with distraught or angry people; requires substantial visual concentration on detail dexterity and precision; requires occasional prolonged exposure to visual display terminal.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Masters degree in special education and/or related fields; Special Education Program Administrators certification and/or Principals certification; experience with the coordination of special education programs.

Allowable Substitution

Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for administrative experience requirement on a year-for-year basis as deemed appropriate.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of disability justice curriculum materials and instructional/behavioral techniques and theories; skill in program development and evaluation staff supervision fiscal management and staff development; demonstrated ability in supporting regular and special education instructional services; ability to work effectively with a diverse population; skill in oral and written communications and problem-solving; ability to work effectively with parents and advisory committees to build trust and effective working relationships; ability to work with students parents and staff to implement curriculum in regular and alternative educational settings; ability to assist in the accomplishment of the districts strategic plan goals and objectives.



Salary: Non-Represented Administrator (NNRAP-AD) 2025-26 Salary ScheduleLevel A; placement on the salary schedule will be determined by Human Resources DOE. FLSA Exempt.


Work Year: 12 month position 260 days per year 8.0 hours per day.

Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package for eligible positions. Generally you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
