POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Jackson Hole Middle School is seeking a dynamic and student-centered Band Director / Music Teacher to lead and grow a thriving middle school band program while supporting comprehensive music education for students in grades 6ï½8. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing beginning intermediate and advanced band students through high-quality instrumental instruction ensemble leadership and performance opportunities. This position plays a key role in strengthening the districts 6ï½12 music pipeline through collaboration with the Kï½12 music team. Other areas of music instruction will be strongly considered such as choir guitar and orchestra.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for instruction in the areas of grades 6-8.
- Responsible for planning and leading two concerts per school year.
- Collaborating with the K-12 music team in aligning and supporting music education across all schools in the district.
- Teaches skills in music understanding/appreciation harmony explorations in music.
- Support the development of cultural awareness and understanding through music
- Plans/executes a balanced music program and organizes class time so that preparation rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music musical instruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.
- Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
- Evaluates each students musical growth performance and musical understanding. Assesses each individuals contribution to the performance of the group.
- Selects appropriate music books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions musical instruments and instructional supplies as necessary.
- Cooperation with the Building Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies open house parent meetings and seasonal programs.
- Communicates with parents and school staff on individual students progress.
- Supports the schools improvement plan and collaborates with staff to incorporate school improvement efforts into the music program.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Desired Skills:
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in band education and instrumental music instruction.
- Experience directing and managing a school band program.
- Ability to recruit develop and retain student participation in band.
- Capacity to design and expand music offerings including courses such as guitar or other contemporary music classes.
Required Skills:
- All abilities of a good teacher: excellent classroom management sound instructional practice ability to communicate effectively with parents and other school personnel etc.
- Ability to differentiate for learners at different academic and language levels
- Desire and ability to work collaboratively in a teaming situation.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in Music Education.
- Applicants must be able to obtain a Wyoming PTSB teacher certification with a 6-12 or K-12Music Content Endorsement requiredthat is issued by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board ().
The School District places employees on salary schedules on the basis of:
- Wyoming experience.
- Out-of-state experience up to 7 years.
- Degree ï½ Bachelors Masters or Doctorate.
- Semester Graduate Credits beyond Degree.
Salary pending approval of the 26/27 Compensation Package; 25/26 package can be foundhere.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person may need to lift arms to write on chalk or marking board and occasionally stoop kneel crouch and reach 0 - 24 inches and up to 36 inches above the head. The employee is directly responsible for the safety well-being and work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed materialthe ability to adjust focus and exposure to screen(s) via technology. Hearing ability to monitor activity and presence of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room and our playing of instruments. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
