The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration Health Services Rehabilitation & Reentry Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Located at Granville Correctional Institution employees in this class handle the initial interviewing and processing of those persons entering the prison system. Employees are located at a Diagnostic Center in the prison facility where the inmates are processed. Work primarily involves gathering socioeconomic information education substance abuse history explaining terms of the sentence and providing general orientation to prison processes and procedures.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position is responsible for the initial interviewing and processing of offenders sentenced to prison. Other responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recording data and maintaining all offender records.

  • Conducting offender orientation classes on a regular basis.

  • Obtaining various types of information (socioeconomic education substance abuse history etc.) from offenders once they have been admitted including interviewing offenders explaining terms of their sentence and entering information into the OPUS system from the commitment and a variety of personal background documents and interviews.

  • Making recommendations to a supervisor from the information gathered during the admission process as needed.

  • Communicating clearly with offenders who may be difficult to communicate with and who may not understand why information is being asked and/or may have difficulty providing responses while utilizing various approaches with different offenders in order to ensure successful collection of necessary data.

  • Explaining policies practices and procedures as well as answering basic questions a new offender may have regarding what to expect during his commitment.

  • Creating and maintaining a variety of files in both electronic and in hard copy format. including but not limited to offender records reports memorandum policies orientation materials and statistics and general correspondences.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits.

Note to Current State Employees:

The salary grade for this position isNC02 Salary Range ($31200 - $ 51249). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Granville Correctional Institution:

Granville CorrectionalInstitutionhouses offenders in both single cells and dormitories. When the facility opened in 1997 its main mission was to process newly-admitted youthful offenders between the ages of 19 and 21. The prison also houses offenders that participate in job assignments and other programs. It is a close-custody prison but it is also approved to house offenders assigned to maximum control intensive control disciplinary segregation and safekeeping status.

The prisons high-security maximum control unit (HCON) opened in October 1998. This high-security concept in correctional design is intended for the states most violent and assaultive offenders. The Supermax (HCON) unit in Butner was the first of its kind in North Carolina.

Due to the demand of prison space in 2003 the facilitys age criteria for offenders changed from 18-21 to 19-25. In October 2005 the facility changed its name from Polk Youth Institution to Polk Correctional Institution to reflect this older population including the HCON unit.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.   • Documented knowledge of the objectives techniques and policy/procedures of a prison/correctional environment.

  • Documented knowledge of the techniques of interviewing.

  • Documented working knowledge of an admission process into a correctional environment or human services program.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of correctional or human services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
