Other Conditions:

This position is supported by extramural funds. Appointment to begin August 1 2026. Renewal contingent upon satisfactory work performance availability of funds and program needs. Selectee is required to pass a criminal background check and complete Title IX training.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach special education courses and supervise teacher candidates on all islands via a variety of delivery modes (e.g. in-person distance);

  • Participate in ongoing curriculum and program development activities including program evaluations;

  • Provide service to the department and college;

  • Contribute to the University of Hawaiis mission and goals;

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in special education or in a closely related field with relevant evidence from a college or university of recognized standing.

  • Evidence of passing the Knowledge and Practice Examination of Effective Reading Instruction (KPEERI) exam prior to the start date.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of full-time classroom experience as a licensed special educator.

  • Experience teaching reading to K-12 students with disabilities who are culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the science of reading including systematic and explicit literacy instruction/intervention with students with disabilities.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogy focusing on Hawaiian and Pacific Island communities

  • Experience in educational supervision and/or mentoring.

  • Experience designing and delivering courses in variedinstructional delivery formats (e.g hybrid/blended fully online).

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working on collaborative teams (or working collaboratively with other professionals).

  • Experience with inclusive education of students with disabilities.

  • Experience teaching non-traditional university students from varied backgrounds.

  • Knowledge and experience of Structured Literacy instruction.

  • Knowledge and experience with tiered literacy intervention (reading or writing) within a multi-tiered system of support.
