GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe high-quality and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a full-time Dispatcher II for the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) Dispatch Program located in Cheyenne Wyoming.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol dispatchers require excellent interpersonal skills good memory retention and the ability to calmly and accurately process information under pressure. Work involves rotating shifts weekends and holidays. This position works with minimal supervision and is responsible for dispatching law enforcement officers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol utilizing a two-way radio system and extensive computer operation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Dispatches law enforcement and other emergency services personnel to specific locations via telephone and two-way radio network.

  • Monitors the status of field units assigning additional resources as requested or required and reaches appropriate and independent decisions from detailed and complex information.

  • In addition to Wyoming Highway Patrol activities this position is responsible for dispatching the Game and Fish Brand Inspectors Bureau of Land Management the Wyoming Livestock Board the Division of Criminal Investigation State Park Rangers the U.S. Forest Service and the Wyoming Outfitter Board.

  • An individual in this position must possess advanced knowledge of policy procedures and equipment operations and must have the ability to relate this knowledge to dispatchers and others.

  • In the absence of a supervisor this position may provide support and guidance to less-experienced dispatchers.

  • Responsibilities may include participating in classroom training one-on-one training and in-service training to provide the foundation from which new dispatchers will draw information and build upon it throughout their law enforcement careTheer.

  • Must acquire 20 hours of POST-certified training every two years to maintain state-required POST certification.

  • The next training cycle will begin Monday June 1st.


Qualifications


PREFERENCES:


Preference will be given to candidates with two or more years of Wyoming Highway Patrol dispatch experience.
Preference will be given to candidates who have approved public safety dispatch certification.
Preference will be given to candidates who have good communication and people skills.
Preference will be given to candidates who have attention to detail good memory retention familiarity with computers and strong typing ability.


KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of officer safety procedures and protocol.

  • Knowledge of Wyomings highway system geography topography city county and state multi-jurisdictional boundaries and the computerized mapping system.

  • Knowledge of the course of action required for managing hazardous material incidents concerning the response and relay of information for man-made and natural disasters. Interpret information from the Chemical Transportation Center and hazardous material guides.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Dispatch) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Patrol Dispatcher I

Education:
Associates Degree

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Dispatch) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Patrol Dispatcher I

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Applicants must be able to work shifts holidays and weekends.

  • Applicants must be physically able to hear and record messages transmitted over radio telephone or similar devices.

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt

  • Applicants must not have driving privileges suspended within 3 years of the test date.

  • Applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation including a credit check psychological polygraph medical and drug testing.

  • Applicants must pass an FBI fingerprint check and must not have any felony convictions or indictments.

  • Applicants must not have used marijuana within one (1) year of the test date.

  • Applicants must not have used any other controlled substance within three (3) years of the test date.

  • Must be a US Citizen.

    • Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:

      • Temporary employees accepting a part-time permanent position.

      • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.

      • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive and funds will be recouped from final pay.

      • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

      • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
      • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period they would be required to pay the bonus back.
