BASIC FUNCTION:

The Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement supports the Director of Student Engagement and Assistant Dean for Student Engagement in advising and managing student involvement and activities with an intentional focus on student leadership development learning and organizational effectiveness. Through supervised hands-on practice the Graduate Assistant serves as an advisor and liaison to student clubs and organizations supporting registration budgeting event planning risk management and leadership training while promoting student autonomy and inclusive leadership practices. The Graduate Assistant collaborates with Associated Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) CMCs student government and campus partners to strengthen club management systems supports major engagement initiatives such as Student Involvement Fairs and New Student Orientation manages the involvement portal and contributes to the broader mission of the Dean of Students Office. This position is anticipated to begin in August 2026 and end in May 2027.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement the Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in supporting leadership development and organizational operations for ASCMC student clubs and organizations (approximately 60) including registration and training coordination.
  • Assist in supporting leadership development and organizational operations for Department Managed Student Organizations (DMSOs) (approximately 15) including registration and training coordination.
  • Assist with advising the ASCMC Vice President of Campus Organizations on the management of CMC clubs with support from Student Engagement staff.
  • Contribute to efforts that streamline and improve club management structures and processes that enhance clarity consistency and strong support for student-led organizations.
  • Assist in organizing and hosting annual Fall and Spring Student Involvement Fairs in partnership with the Director of Student Engagement.
  • Attend bi-weekly 5C Activities Committee meetings and work collaboratively with counterpart professionals at the other Claremont Colleges to support clubs and activities across the colleges including coordination of the 5C Club Fair.
  • Assist with management of the Claremont McKenna branch of campus involvement portal.
  • Support New Student Orientation programming including assisting with assessment processes analysis and communication of findings.
  • Support and participate in major Student Engagement and Dean of Students programs when possible including frequent evening and weekend events.
  • Respond to requests for information regarding student involvement and activities.
  • Communicate with other CMC and DOS staff regarding student issues and individual student concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

EDUCATION: Bachelors degree required or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities is required. Must currently be or will be pursuing a masters degree in higher education and/or student affairs administration education counseling or related field concurrently while in the position.

LICENSES: A valid drivers license or equivalent alternate form of transportation to off-site meetings and events is required. A valid drivers license and the ability to be insured under the Colleges authorized drivers policy are required to drive college-owned vehicles.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Background in student activities or related experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the use of programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a student development philosophy within higher education.
  • Understanding of how to meet the cultural social and recreational needs of a campus community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and self-driven.
  • Must have excellent time management skills.

OTHER:

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this temporary part-time position are 20 hours per week on a variable schedule. Frequent evening and weekend work will be required to support campus programs and activities. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a temporary part-time 10-month non-exempt non-benefits eligible position. This position is anticipated to begin in August 2026 and end in May 2027 depending upon the needs of the department. The incumbent may have the opportunity to return for an additional 10-month assignment if they continue to be enrolled in an eligible masters program for the following academic year.
