Position and Salary
The Attorney Generals Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 3 in the Labor and Industries Section of the Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division. This position is located in Spokane Washington and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).

Paralegal 3 Salary Range 59: $67992 - $91464

The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidates job-related knowledge skills and experience.

The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

  • Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

About the Labor and Industries Division

The Spokane Labor and Industries Section is comprised of 8 attorneys 4 paralegal 3 2 paralegals 2s 4 paralegal 1s and one legal assistant. The Spokane Labor and Industries Section handles a variety of litigation on behalf of the Department of Labor and Industries including litigating workers compensation claims building trades litigation fraud cases wage cases and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act violations. Section attorneys practice in almost every legal forum from the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and Office of Administrative Hearings to state appellate courts.


Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 3

This paralegal position supervises paralegals and professional staff and performs highly complex paraprofessional work which absent the paralegal would be performed by an assistant attorney general. This position performs substantive litigation and technical support to the divisions attorneys with a high level of independence including providing support through all stages of litigation.

Tasks include but are not limited to;

Supervisory:
Plan lead organize and control the work performed by paralegals and other professional staff. Directs and is responsible for the hiring evaluation training and corrective action of supervised staff requiring a thorough understanding and implementation of agency policy and procedures. Authority to approve leave and timekeeping for supervised staff.
Responsible for staff assignments and workload distribution. Assist in the development of systems and procedures to assure effective and efficient case management and work methods.
Participate as a member of the management team. Is a model and provides leadership to promote team work motivate staff and produce high quality services.

Legal Work:
Discovery requests and document management. Composes reviews and prepares responses to formal discovery requests. Identify locate collect organize analyze assess and manage documentary statistical computer and demonstrative evidence including records and other information obtained from public and private sources for use in civil litigation. Assist in all phases of trial preparation which may include preparation of trial exhibits trial notebooks jury instructions motions witness interviews scheduling and communicating with the parties court hearing tribunals and witnesses; interviewing client personnel to obtain facts; composing affidavits and/or declarations as attachments to motions and briefs; preparing witnesses documentary evidence electronic evidence and demonstrative evidence for hearings and trials; identifying compiling tracking and providing evidence (testimonial and foundational) to experts; organizing document production and/or document coding for use as possible evidence in complex litigation; and assisting at hearings trials meditations depositions and settlement conferences.

Qualifications

Combination of six years of experience* through:

  • Paralegal certification
  • Two-year paralegal degree
  • Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal post BA) certification

and/or

  • Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney

OR

  • Twoyears experience as a Paralegal 2 in Washington State Service.

*You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work.

Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:

  • Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
  • Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
  • Calculating verifying and calendaring critical events and other dates
  • Managing case documents files and exhibits
  • Tracking and organizing discovery documents
  • Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy

Skills & Abilities

Civil litigation with discovery experience to include document review management analysis and production e-discovery programs and attention to detail
