JOB PURPOSE: The Psychological Science Instructional Laboratory Coordinator will participate in the teaching development and coordination of the Psychological Science lab curriculum. The position involves both curricular development and course instruction. The Instructional Lab Coordinator will provide students with rigorous first-hand experience in the design and execution of psychological research at all levels of the Psychological Science Curriculum from the introductory course through the methods/statistic sequence to more advanced lab courses. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Department Chair the Psychological Science Instructional Laboratory Coordinator performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and coordination of Psychological Science laboratory courses (including Introduction to Psychological Science Core Methods and Statistics courses Advanced Methods/Statistics and support for Senior Thesis and Upper Division Lab Courses). In-class instruction as either lab instructor or primary instructor at the overall equivalent of a 3-2 teaching load
  • The successful candidate will effectively engage in the following activities:
    a. Coordinate with faculty to design laboratory courses and activities that give students meaningful hands-on experience in psychological research.
    b. Contribute to the conceptualization and continual improvement of the lab curriculum in Psychological Science.
    c. Serve as either lab instructor or primary instructor in various Psychological Science courses with excellent course organization in-class instruction and accessibility to students.
    d. Maintain computer programs and instruments associated with teaching labs and collaborate with personnel for repair and replacement.
    e. Learn and utilize research-related software as needed for laboratory instruction.
    f. Ensure safety and adherence to research ethics standards in all laboratory activities.
    g. Assist student research in the senior thesis exercise.
  • Directly supervise one or more student employees in the Psychological Science Department who may work as course mentors. Must complete the bi-annual AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training as required by the State of California.
  • Participate in department meetings including discussion of curricular plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: A Ph.D. in Psychological Science or a related field is preferred with demonstrated skills in research methods and statistics.

  • Experience: Experience in teaching and supervising student research at an academic institution are preferred. The ideal candidate will have proficiency in both English and Spanish language (though the latter is not required) and experience with relevant software. Finally the successful candidate will have experience working with a diverse faculty and student body.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: The candidate must possess the knowledge skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge skills and abilities not listed below.

  • Deploy professional skills in psychology laboratory and curriculum management in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the Colleges and Departments strategic interests.
    a. Follow established organizational policies and procedures.
    b. Understand and adhere to APA standards in research ethics in supervising research projects.
    c. Demonstrate and accept responsibility for major work assignments team management and collaborations as they relate to College and departmental objectives.
    d. Work well with students in the classroom laboratory and thesis supervision.
  • Demonstrate effective accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal written and interpersonal skills to work with colleagues and student mentors in curricular design and course instruction. Follow written and verbal instructions asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Use exceptional organizational time management and process planning skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail. These skills will be manifest in the following:
    a. Must be a resourceful planner of work processes.
    b. Think independently and creatively solve problems.
    c. Adapt positively and proactively to changing circumstances to achieve results and to seek growth opportunities and solutions.
    d. Anticipate and address changes use available resources and manage time.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic software such as Microsoft Office as well as experimental and data analysis software relevant to laboratory courses and senior thesis projects. Handle all activities including confidential information with patience discretion good judgment integrity courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in working with students staff and faculty from diverse backgrounds and initiative in making our classrooms and laboratories inclusive environments.
  • Demonstrate or gain familiarity with open science practices in psychological research (e.g. pre-registrations; use of data repositories and material sharing archives such as Open Science Framework or Research Box) and incorporate these activities into the lab curriculum as appropriate.

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday Friday except during the designated summer period when office hours end at 4:30 p.m. Overtime holiday weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the College or division.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: The rate for this role is between $73518 to $97411 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include but not be limited to: education training relevant prior experience and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
