Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I position within the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. This position will perform a wide range of tasks to include supervising a crew of subordinates and inmate labor while performing various operations related to roadway maintenance activities. This position will calculate quantities of materials needed document use of labor and equipment and materials used. The selected applicant must safely operate and supervise the operation of various pieces of equipment as assigned. Additional duties will include conducting and documenting tailgate safety meetings as necessary as well as complying and participating in the Units Safety Program. May be utilized to answer or respond to after-hours and emergency calls as needed.

Additional Expectations:
Safety-toed shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check complete necessary training and orientation and be at least 21 years of age.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC14 / $52592 - $92036

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in record keeping such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation asphalt patching snow and ice removal crack sealing full depth patching or pothole patching
  • Experience in road maintenance and repair as well as maintenance equipment operation
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
