The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest most complex agencies in the state and has approximately 17000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health safety and well-being of all North Carolinians providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf blind developmentally disabled and mentally ill and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence.
Description of Work
The primary purpose of this position is to expose and train individuals with developmental disabilities to relevant aspects of work as it occurs in the actual community. The Specialist provides active treatment primarily in the area of vocational training so that residents can gain independence in work-related skills. The Specialist is responsible for overseeing and scheduling enclave or individual work in the addition to vocational skills this position will teach other objectives specified in residents person-centered plans that can be integrated into the vocational setting including communication work adjustment social skills and community-referenced skills. The Specialist will be responsible for collecting and reporting progress data on teaching objectives as well as documenting resident work hours. This position will make recommendations to the person-centered planning team regarding both vocational placement and teaching objectives. This position will serve as a backup for resident payroll and pay window.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Minimum Education and Experience
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates degree in a Human Services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience working with the population served; or
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience providing instruction to individuals with one or more disabilities preferably involving task analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Degrees must be from appropriately accredited colleges or universities.
