Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

The Molecular and Cell Biology Department is seeking to fill a 12-month Laboratory Assistant (UCP 1) position. The successful candidate will provide support for undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Department and assist faculty in the care use and maintenance of animals plants chemicals and/or reagents used in research and/or teaching.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans assembles and prepares any apparatus necessary to carry out all experiments in the laboratories.
  • Washes and sterilizes glassware.
  • Assists with the care of zebra fish.
  • Decontaminates biohazard waste following approved safety guidelines.
  • Monitors the safety and security of labs.
  • May act as a stockroom clerk.
  • Maintains sterility and cleanliness of all apparatus. Performs minor repairs on equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and orders as necessary.
  • Assists in preparing setting up and monitoring laboratory practicals.
  • Participates in discipline-specific lab procedures including tissue or specimen collection and testing.
  • Operates equipment instrumentation and software to maintain conditions as required by research or educational goals.
  • Performs related work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelors degree in a related field with up to one year of related experience; OR Associates degree in a related field with two years of related experience.
  2. Demonstrated experience with standard laboratory procedures including safety and hazardous waste disposal (chemical and biological).
  3. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office and related software applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Post-degree laboratory experience in an academic setting.
  2. Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated experience communicating with various groups.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

Other rights terms and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA). This position requires the incumbent to lift 40lbs perform repetitive tasks and be able to stand for an extensive amount of time while performing these tasks.

The estimated start date is March 6th 2026 and the expected work hours would be Monday Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm including one hour for incumbent may be expected to work flexible hours depending on lab course schedules.
