School Nurse

Position Summary

At Ankeny Schools the School Nurse is at the heart of our commitment to supporting the health safety and well-being of every student. School Nurses provide compassionate professional healthcare services that allow students to fully engage in learning manage health needs and thrive throughout the school day. Through direct care health planning and wellness education School Nurses support students physical emotional and developmental needs in a school-based setting. Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent
  • Registered nurse with valid Iowa Licensure
  • Current CPR certification
  • Obtain Statement of Professional Recognition (SPR) through Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE)

Essential Functions

Health Services Administration & Compliance

Participates in the development and implementation of school health policies and procedures while maintaining accurate complete and confidential student health records. Effectively manages time and resources to ensure the efficient delivery of school health services and administers medications in accordance with established guidelines and district procedures documenting all administration accurately.

Student Health Monitoring & Individualized Care

Monitors student health conditions that may impact learning and develops and implements Individual Health Plans (IHPs) to support student access to education in the school setting. Instructs school staff on plans of care and student health needs and collaborates with students physicians to ensure appropriate medical services are provided during the school day.

Health Screenings & Preventive Services

Plans and implements health screenings as required by board policy and monitors for outbreaks of infectious or communicable diseases. Implements response protocols in coordination with public health guidance and collaborates with public health agencies as necessary. Provides immunization and health information to parents and guardians including during kindergarten registration.

Emergency Response & Crisis Intervention

Provides emergency care as needed and participates in crisis intervention efforts to support students families and school personnel. Coordinates or facilitates CPR instruction for students and staff when required or appropriate.

Collaboration Consultation & Communication

Partners with administrators parents or guardians and school personnel to communicate pertinent student health needs and concerns. Initiates health referral processes serves as a liaison between school home and community resources and collects health data for Area Education Association (AEA) staffings participating in meetings as needed.

Health Education & Staff Support

Serves as a resource to faculty in the planning and implementation of the health curriculum and provides health education to individual students groups of students families and school personnel. Offers wellness information and programs for staff and assists building principals in providing educational materials to meet health-mandated employee requirements.

School Environment & Safety

Contributes to the development and maintenance of a safe and healthful school environment. Conducts home visits when appropriate and in collaboration with administration and support services to support student health and well-being.

Leadership Training & Delegation

Delegates trains and supervises the delivery of health services by non-licensed personnel in accordance with state law nurse practice standards and district policy to ensure safe and effective care.

Community & Family Support

Assists families in accessing food clothing and other basic needs through coordination with local agencies community organizations and support services.

Attendance & Reliability

Demonstrates consistent and reliable attendance and punctuality in alignment with district expectations recognizing the importance of continuity of health services for students. Maintains dependable availability to support student safety wellness and timely response to health needs throughout the school day.

  • Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assistance to all employees fostering a welcoming and approachable atmosphere.
  • Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions with colleagues students and families.
  • Use positive and professional communication in all interactions.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by the Ankeny Community School District to ensure the safety of oneself and others.
  • Support District goals and objectives while adhering to all District policies contributing to the overall success of the school community.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
