Role Summary
The Head Legal Environment & Land is responsible for ensuring full compliance with legal environmental and land-related statutory requirements. The role oversees all litigation and dispute-resolution matters manages land assets and acquisition activities and ensures adherence to environmental norms and regulatory guidelines. The position also provides leadership to the department manages external legal and regulatory stakeholders and supports organisational reputation through effective communication and media coordination where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Management
- Lead and oversee all legal proceedings involving the organisation including litigation mediation arbitration and statutory matters.
- Ensure systematic arrangement maintenance and retrieval of legal documents and correspondence required as evidence or compliance proof.
- Coordinate with external legal counsel for timely preparation of responses and closure of ongoing legal cases.
- Manage the panel of legal professionals including onboarding fee negotiations payments and periodic performance evaluations.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive legal document repository with standard checklists and indexing protocols update in line with regulatory changes.
- Ensure timely vetting and legal review of contracts agreements and other legal documents through internal or external counsel.
- Environmental Compliance
- Ensure timely compliance with all State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) requirements including CTE (Consent to Establish) CTO (Consent to Operate) and statutory returns.
- Manage timely renewal of CTE/CTO and secure new approvals for upcoming projects.
- Oversee implementation of pollution control measures and ensure compliance with applicable environmental norms.
- Facilitate obtaining ToR (Terms of Reference) and Environmental Clearance (EC) for new projects.
- Ensure adherence to guidelines and compliance standards issued by MoEF&CC (Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change).
- Manage all statutory requirements and clearances related to Forest Department groundwater and surface-water extraction and related environmental agencies.
- Land Acquisition & Asset Management
- Manage all activities related to land acquisition lease agreements registrations mutations public hearings and other statutory land matters.
- Handle all matters pertaining to JIADA (Jharkhand Industrial Area Development Authority) including compliance documentation and liaison.
- Maintain updated land records and ensure legal protection of company land assets.
- Administration & Team Leadership
- Oversee compliance and liaise with statutory departments such as Chief Factory Inspector PF Commissioner and Labour Commissioner.
- Participate in recruitment and coordinate with HR to build a skilled and compliant departmental team; ensure timely hiring for all open positions.
- Provide periodic MIS reports to the management in prescribed formats and timelines.
- PR & Media Coordination
- Collaborate with the PR and Communications team to ensure legally compliant and accurate communication for media interactions public hearings and regulatory disclosures.
- Support reputation management by assessing legal/environmental risks in public communications and advising on appropriate messaging.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelors degree in law (LLB); masters degree or specialization in Environmental Law/Corporate Law preferred.
- 18 years of relevant experience in corporate legal management environmental compliance and land acquisition manufacturing sectors.
- Strong liaison skills with government authorities and regulatory agencies.
- Proven ability to manage litigation external counsel and complex compliance frameworks.
