The Medical Assistant is an integral part of the team concept in The Counseling Centers delivery system. This position helps patients by providing information services and assistance. The Medical Assistant supports the activities of the Medical Providers and renders care under the direction of the Medical Providers. The ma maintains the clinic environment to care and carry out the necessary functions required in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Collects patient data and materials.
- Obtains health history and base line patient data from the patients.
- Performs routine physical data collection functions.
- Collects urine in accordance with established protocols. Performs breathalyzer screening.
- Uses discretion in disseminating patient information to outside sources.
- Reviews patient chart prior to visit for completeness.
- Provides entries to patient records as necessary in preparation for provider review.
- Monitors return of lab/test results. Assures all test results have been completed and are in the medical record.
Assists with patient care as appropriate.
- Delivers on-site care for clients as directed by Medical Providers.
- Telephones callbacks to patients as directed by provider and in accordance with established protocol.
Maintains clinical areas.
- Responsible for restocking exam rooms as necessary with medical instruments and other medical supplies.
- Upon completion of each patient encounter prepare exam room for next patient.
- Notifies Support Staff Supervisor in a timely manner regarding office supplies which need to be ordered/replenished.
- Monitors and arranges for proper disposal of lab and medical supplies (i.e. cultures injectables/medical waste).
Provides clerical support.
- Maintains accurate medical records. Schedules patients for treatment when necessary.
- Completes medical forms for providers review and signature as directed.
- Schedules referrals with specialist Physicians for patients upon the request of the Medical Provider.
- Provides clerical support including but not limited to the answering of phones assisting clients with paperwork scheduling appointments etc.
- Takes initiative.
Assumes responsibility for professional self-growth.
- Evaluates strengths and weaknesses and seeks guidance from the supervisor.
- Implements self-improvement action plan based on annual evaluations and feedback developed with the Director of Clinical Operations.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the medical field and implements the changes as approved.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills including listening skills verbal skills and written skills.
QualificationsEducational / Minimum Requirements:
- High School Graduate and completion of an accredited course of training in Medical Assisting.
- Six months experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
- General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to take vital signs knowledgeable in medical terminology anatomy and physiology. Familiarity with medical equipment common to a medical practice. Experience with behavioral health population preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Bending stooping walking sitting on a daily basis. On feet most of the day. Assists patients in and out of treatment rooms in and out of chairs on and off exam tables. Ability to spend one to four hours/day at computer terminal/personal computer performing data entry analysis. Must be able to hear with sufficient acuity so as to understand routine conversation in person or over telephone. Must possess sufficient visual acuity so as to read use computers and conduct essential job functions in an acceptable manner. Must be able to speak so as to be understood by the average person. Significant documentation and paperwork review requiring extensive visual acuity.
Work Environment:
- Medical office setting with direct exposure to patients body fluids possible exposure to blood borne pathogens. High volume of telephone and personal contact with customers
Cognitive Requirements:
- Must be able to triage patients according to need and time requirements. Must possess excellent communication skills. Must provide comprehensive accurate initial assessment to Medical Providers. Must be able to read both routine and technical information with comprehension. Must be able to write so the average person can comprehend. Must be able to perform simple calculations for medication doses physical exams and tests administered.
