Job Summary
Summary: Responsible for combining research in biology medicine and health-related studies with information technology in order to collect and interpret data covering a range of fields such as genetics or pharmaceutics. The bioinformatician creates mathematical models develops dynamic simulations and performs pattern analyses of biological systems.Does this position require Patient Care No
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the analysis of biological data using bioinformatics tools and software.
- Perform data processing quality control and database maintenance.
- Collaborate with research teams to understand their data analysis needs.
- Support the development and implementation of data analysis pipelines.
- Conduct basic statistical analyses and data visualization.
- Participate in the interpretation and presentation of results.
- Working under very general supervision the Bioinformatics Analyst will have demonstrated independent design and innovation in one or more of the following areas of specialization: algorithm development data analysis quality assurance/testing pipeline software/computing development user interface design & report development web-based application development or report development.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelors Degree Computational Biology or related field required.
PhD or Masters Degree Related Field of Study preferred.
Experience:
Computational Sciences Experience 0-1 year preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience in infrastructure programming languages and computational sciences.
- Demonstrated ability working with open-source bioinformatics software.
- Possess strong analytical skills including critical thinking data modeling problem solving and troubleshooting.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to all levels of staff.
- Excellent time management skills.

Our laboratory studies immune mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases including Alzheimers disease multiple sclerosis and ALS with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets. The Bioinformatician will support the analysis of high-throughput genomic and transcriptomic datasets using established computational pipelines. This is anentry-level early-career positionfocused on executing defined analyses under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior laboratory members.
We study the immunologic mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases to identify novel therapeutic targets. We use a range of genomic tools to analyze in vitro and in vivo experimental models and human samples. Our lab is working in a highly collaborative environment studying multiple diseases including Alzheimers disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis multiple sclerosis and eye-related diseases. The applicant would interface with the group by analyzing gene and protein expression data related to these disorders. Strong computational organizational and communication skills are desired for this position.
Preferred Abilities:
- Perform analysis of bulk RNA-seq single-cell RNA-seq and single-nucleus RNA-seq datasets including quality control alignment quantification differential expression and pathway analysis.
- Apply established laboratory pipelines and workflows to new datasets.
- Generate figures visualizations and summary reports for internal meetings manuscripts and grant applications.
- Validate data and perform error checking to ensure data integrity and reproducibility.
- Organize datasets and analysis outputs using lab-approved data storage and version-control practices.
- Collaborate with postdoctoral fellows research scientists and the Principal Investigator to interpret results and plan next analytical steps.
- Maintain documentation of analyses and computational workflows.
- Stay current with relevant bioinformatics tools and methods.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with statistical analysis for differential gene expression and mapping to biological pathways.
- Ability to apply statistical and machine learning techniques to solve big data problems.
- Ability to analyze single-cell expression data.
- Good organizational skills detail-oriented.
- Experience in Programing with MATLAB R Python and/or Java that focuses on computational biological applications.
- Experience with common bioinformatics and genomic browsers NCBI Genbank UCSC.
- Understanding the use of bioinformatics tools including common NGS tools BWA samtools GATK.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative and intellectually challenging environment.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to prepare manuscripts for presentation and publication.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within a research team.
