Job Summary
Summary
The primary purpose of the position is: The incumbent performs the administrative and personnel management functions on assigned staff; provides formal and informal feedback and evaluates staff performance and completes focused and ongoing practice evaluations on assigned staff. Supervises staff that have various tours to include evenings and weekend. The Social Work Supervisor provides direct supervision of subordinates and directs the work of staff.
Duties include but are not limited to:
The Supervisory Social Worker provides supervision to a group of employees performing work at various GS levels up to their own grade and provides administrative technical and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the program and service. Incumbent may maintain a clinical practice caseload depending on workload in the assigned area.
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave 13 days of sick leave 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment full time employees with a total family income below $144000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education. Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
- Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
- Employees may be reassigned promoted up to and including the full performance (journey) level or changed to lower grade within the occupation but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions.
- Employees in an occupation that requires a licensure/certification/ registration only at higher grade levels must meet the licensure/ certification/registration requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels.
- Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
- Employees who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of re-entry to the occupation.
- Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/certification/registration that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.
Supervisory Social Worker GS-12
Licensure Requirement: You must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Education and Experience. You must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-11 include but are not limited to: assessing and documenting identified behaviors or symptoms of abuse neglect exploitation and/or intimate partner violence; use of clinical social work skills; maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality per policies handbooks or directives; acting as an advocate with appropriate community service providers and agencies when it serves the best interest of the patient and family members/caregiver; independently assessing the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members identifying the patients strengths weaknesses coping skills and psychosocial acuity.
Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
- (a) Ability to independently organize work set priorities and meet multiple deadlines.
- (b) Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision consultation negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
- (c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
- (d) Ability to provide staff training and development.(e) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees team leaders and managers.
Preferred Experience:
- Supervisory Experience (1-year leadership team lead or supervisor)
- Experience working independently with minimal supervision
- Medical Inpatient and/or Outpatient Social Work Experience
- Experience working with an interdisciplinary team
- Experience completing administrative task in the management or support of a
program
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices hospitals warehouses and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
