The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for team-oriented individuals to help us create quality experiences for every young person in our summer camp programs. We look for staff who enjoy being outside and working with young people ages 3-15. We need different kinds of staff to meet the needs of our campers. Summer Camp Staff will:
- Attend staff training June 8-12.
- Work at our camps located at the Community Activity Center Norwood Park Northwoods Park and Willowstone Park M-Th from June 15-August 8. We will be off July 2.
- Additional hours may be available throughout the summer for special events or programs.
- Be placed on work teams based on their skills and areas of interest and will work with groups agesor teens 13-15. Program areas include preschool camp day camp and teen camp.
- Work under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor in charge of the summer camp program.
NOTE: This posting will be used to fill up to 50 Summer Camp Staff in both Group Leaders and Assistant Group Leader positions depending on the education experience and skillsets. All levels of experience and skillsets are encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Engage young people ages 5-15 in recreation programs and activities
- Attend all in service workshops and staff trainings as scheduled by supervisor
- Work cooperatively with other summer recreation staff to create a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere for young people
- Plan and lead various activities and work with other summer recreation staff to implement daily lesson plans.
- Work creatively with other summer recreation staff to develop and carry out themes and events for program participants
- Regularly communicate with parents and caregivers about participant progress and any behavior concerns
- Adhere to department policies and procedures
- Full schedule availability for the entire 8 weeks of camp M-Th 8am-5:30pm
- Other duties as assigned or apparent
Asst. Group Leaders (15-17) Key Responsibilities:- Assist Group Leaders with group supervision
- Help organize games and activities
- Model good behavior for younger campers
- Clean-up and set-up support
Group Leader (18) Key Responsibilities:
- Full camper supervision
- Lead and plan daily schedules and activities
- Handle behavioral support
- Administer basic first aid (supported with training)
- Communicate with camp leadership and parents
- Supervise and mentor assistant group leaders and junior staff
- Ensure camper safety and uphold camp policies
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Education
Ability to attend training June 8-12
Experience
- 15 years of age or older by June 1 2026
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience working with young people as a paid staff or volunteer
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of related education/experience may be considered.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities- Possess a genuine interest in the needs of all young people and be able to work in a team atmosphere
- Possess basic problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and think creatively in many situations
- Ability to respond maturely to any emergency or incident that may arise
- Ability to interact with participants and parents in a responsible and professional manner and respond to concerns with tact and courtesy
- Ability to work with appropriate level of supervision during program time
- Commitment to work the entire summer season
- Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
- Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds
- Embrace and engage in cultural shift toward Continuous Improvement
Desired Qualifications- Valid drivers license.
- Three (3) years of experience working with young people as a paid staff member or volunteer
- Experience in coaching sports leading art/science activities performing arts or outdoor education
- Experience with young people with disabilities especially Autism or behavior disorders
- College level coursework in child development teaching strategies psychology coaching leadership or related field.
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid
- Current certification related to program leadership such as WSI Lifeguarding Coaching Special Olympics etc.
- Additional training or coursework in the fields of recreation therapeutic recreation sports administration coaching education special education social work or related field
- Previous experience working with people from various cultural socioeconomicracialand ethnic backgrounds
- Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Lao or Vietnamese
