Summary Description
The City of Urbandale is seeking interested candidates for our Summer 2026 Senior Recreation Center Internship. Reporting to the Senior Recreation Supervisor the intern will gain hands-on experience supporting recreation programs administrative functions and community engagement initiatives designed for adults age 55 and over.
This internship provides a well-rounded opportunity to explore all aspects of recreation and leisure services with a particular emphasis on technology education and program development for seniors. Interns will build practical skills in program planning customer service marketing and municipal recreation operations while making a meaningful impact in the community.
This temporary internship is open to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in recreation leisure services sports management or a related field. The internship runs from mid-May through mid-August 2026 and offers flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday with occasional opportunities to support evening or weekend events.
Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a special project focusing on technology education for seniors from beginning to end using all elements of program planning to successfully complete the project.
- Assist as needed in the office developing phone etiquette filing record keeping and answering customer inquiries.
- Assist with public relations and promotions of department programs and activities including press releases coordinating media coverage developing customer friendly operating procedures designing program fliers and elements of program marketing and assisting with developing the seasonal program guide.
- Create and implement three new programs primarily for seniors likely with a focus on technology education and fluency.
- Attend board meetings staff meetings and council meetings. Review budget procedures contract management and other administrative duties.
- Assist with recreation programs (development coordination scheduling supervision and customer satisfaction). Programming includes education sports & recreation day trips social cards & games gardening technology fitness and more. Some crossover to youth and adult activities will also be available.
Typical Qualifications
- Must be an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in recreation leisure services sports management or a related field.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a valid drivers license.
Preferred Skills Knowledge Abilities:
- Excellent time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Self-motivated punctual and responsible.
- Knowledge of recreation and/or leisure services programming and facility operations.
- Ability to perform essential duties at designated work site location at designated hours.
