Menlo School seeks a part-time Middle School Mandarin Teacher for the school year. This is a one-year substitute position to support the Middle School during an employees leave of absence. The ideal candidate will have 3 or more years of classroom experience teaching Mandarin at the middle school level a bachelors degree in Chinese education or a related field (an advanced degree preferred) and excellent proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (spoken and written). Familiarity with ACTFL proficiency guidelines and standards-based assessment is strongly preferred.
This is a benefits-eligible position.
The Middle School Mandarin Teacher will teach three sections of Mandarin Chinese in grades 6-8 focusing on communicative proficiency and cultural understanding in an interactive student-centered classroom. Reporting to the Director of Middle School and serving as a member of the Middle School World Languages Department the teacher will:
Design and implement communicative student-centered lessons that emphasize listening speaking reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese.
Use a variety of assessments to monitor student progress and provide clear timely feedback.
Differentiate instruction for a range of student abilities.
Plan cultural activities (such as field trips and hands-on experiences) that deepen students understanding of the Chinese-speaking world.
Communicate proactively and effectively with parents students and colleagues.
Integrate appropriate technology to support language acquisition and cultural exploration.
Contribute to the broader life of the Middle School by participating in regular faculty meetings and community events as appropriate for a part-time role.

Pay range:
In the spirit of pay transparency we share the base salary range for this position for the 2026-2027 academic year. Our Faculty have a wide range of experience. We have teachers who are relatively new to the profession and those who have expertly taught for over 30 years. The full-time pay range which encompasses all experience levels is $97000-$182000. Within this broad range we pay each Faculty member in accordance with what is reasonably expected given an individuals experience level. Base salary is exclusive of fringe benefits employer contributions to retirement plans and potential stipends (for eligible employees). Pay ranges at Menlo are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed. If hired at Menlo School your final base salary will be determined by factors such as skills education experience job level part-time status and the number of months worked per academic addition to those factors we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as a part of any final offer. Please note that the generous range mentioned above is the full base salary range for the role. Hiring at the top of the range is not typical at Menlo School to allow for future and continued salary growth.
