Job Purpose
The Senior Civil Engineer will provide leadership and specialist technical expertise in the planning design contract documentation and administration of civil engineering projects. The role includes managing multidisciplinary teams ensuring quality standards driving project delivery and contributing to business development and client engagement initiatives.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Civil Engineering) NQF Level 7
- Labour-Based Construction qualification
- Professional registration with ECSA (Pr Eng / equivalent)
Experience
- 12 15 years experience in:
- Civil engineering design
- Site supervision
- Contract documentation across a range of civil engineering projects
- Minimum 3 years experience in project management of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) or similar labour-intensive projects
Technical Skills & Competencies
- Proven expertise in:
- Roads
- Sewer reticulation systems
- Water supply systems
- Stormwater systems
- Strong knowledge of municipal infrastructure civil design
- Proficient in Civil 3D
- Sound understanding of contract administration and construction monitoring
- Strong report-writing and documentation skills
- Ability to manage budgets man-hours and project finances
- Leadership mentoring and people management capability
- Excellent client engagement and communication skills
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
Technical & Design Leadership
- Act as Project Leader / Senior Design Engineer on assigned projects
- Perform civil engineering designs including complex civil designs
- Review and approve all project designs and drawings
- Assist with and initiate formal design reviews across projects
- Investigate alternative technical solutions to engineering challenges
- Compile and review technical reports and supporting documentation
Project & Contract Management
- Assist clients with project inception feasibility and cost estimates
- Prepare man-hour budgets and control project finances
- Compile project reports data collection and project sheets
- Oversee project archiving in line with current requirements
- Prepare contract documentation and technical specifications including performance and acceptance criteria
- Monitor and administer construction contracts
- Manage project staff involved in drafting design and detailing
Quality & Compliance
- Maintain and enforce ISO 9001 quality assurance standards
- Ensure compliance with engineering statutory and contractual requirements
Business Development & Client Engagement
- Take an active role in:
- Procurement of new work
- Marketing and tendering activities
- Client engagement and relationship management
- Identification of future project opportunities
- Initiate client surveys and request client reference letters
People Development & Resource Management
- Mentor coach and train technicians technologists and engineers
- Assist with managing staffing resources within the division
- Assist with overseeing and identifying the divisions training needs
General
- Perform any other duties reasonably required from time to time by the Department Manager or Managing Director
