Job Summary Under the general direction of the Vice President for Facilities Management and Development the Executive Director of Facilities Maintenance Operations and Engineering independently leads Facilities Maintenance and Operations and aligns with Facilities Planning and Capital Projects to ensure infrastructure standards are maintained sustainability and decarbonization goals are achieved and total life cycle costs are optimized. The Executive Director is responsible for achieving organizational goals and ensuring long-term effectiveness by leading and developing the operational management team their staff members and a $25 million budget. This position serves as an exemplary leader to develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with FMD employees campus constituents and community stakeholders as well as select regulatory and city/county/state agencies. |
Department Summary Facilities Management and Development (FMD) a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD) is responsible for the planning design construction operations maintenance and repair of university facilities grounds and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments including Customer & Business Services; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities Maintenance and support of the Cal Poly mission the FMD department is committed to sustainability responsible stewardship of natural resources and promoting an inclusive culture that values individual and organizational integrity civility equity and diversity. |
Key Qualifications - Serve as the steward of all campus utilities buildings grounds and infrastructure related to facility operations. Enforce the highest possible standards for a safe comfortable effective and efficient working and learning environment while forecasting future needs and setting long-term operational paths.
- Facilitate coordinate and represent operations and maintenance input to the project design and construction teams. This would be accomplished by participation on all major capital working group meetings and executive committee meetings; design submittal reviews; coordinating with the campus engineers and operations staff to ensure all operations and maintenance comments and feedback are considered and providing feedback back to the shops. Provide continued involvement throughout the construction inspection testing acceptance testing and occupancy.
- Collaborate with senior managers within the department and in AFD in establishing and monitoring long and short-term goals and setting department priorities that align with Cal Polys academic strategic plan and physical master plan.
- Provide exemplary leadership and clear direction to management team ensuring effective prioritization development and assessment of operational programs and projects to achieve industry-leading results.
- Approve and monitor annual operating budgets exceeding $30 million including state housing re-charge and utilities funding.

Education and Experience - Masters degree in Engineering Facilities Management or a related field AND eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in planning organizing and directing a large maintenance workforce. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES CERTIFICATES DEGREES CREDENTIALS: - Possession of a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Salary and Benefits The anticipated hiring range for this role is $180000 - $220000 per year. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected. Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
