At the NYC Department of Buildings we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. The Forensics Engineering Unit (FEU) is to ensure the safety of the public within the 5 boroughs of NYC. FEU responds to referrals and emergency incidents that involve complex engineering and structurally compromised buildings such as collapses leaning fire damage vehicle impacts and buildings in disrepair. FEU addresses the structural concerns of buildings along with egress and occupancy.
Position Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Director Forensic Engineering the intern will:
- Participating in site visits with engineers. While onsite supporting Principal Engineers in documenting observations and site conditions for field reports.
- Assisting Principal Engineers in site research and writing reports.
- Creation of site plans and floor plans.
- Assist in writing DOB violations.
- Identifying safety hazards/concerns based on satellite view and street views.
- Conduct structural assessment of a building to determine its stability.
- Determining application of NYC Building Code and various rules and regulations.
- Perform historical records research for buildings throughout NYC.
- Reviewing structural drawings such as structural work masonry wall repairs emergency shoring/bracing support of excavation underpinning demolition etc.
- Assisting in administrative duties.
- Providing support to sister unit Proactive Inspections as needed.
An OSHA 10- Hour Construction Training is required for this role.

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June - August each year.
