The Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (Paramedic) position requires possession of a current valid Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) Certificate. TheHonolulu Emergency Services Department is seeking an experienced and licensed Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (Paramedic) to provide Advance Life Support pre-hospital emergency medical care to residents and visitors all over the Oahu. You will triage assess and guide patient care to deliver advanced life support services in coordination with EMTs base station physicians and other public safety partners at emergency scenes and during patient transport.

What You Will Do:
  • Conduct rapid patient assessments and determine appropriate Advanced Life Support interventions

  • Serve as the on-scene medical lead making independent clinical decisions under standing orders and medical control

  • Perform triage and prioritize care including during mass casualty incidents

  • Drive and/or accompany an ambulance in response to emergency medical service calls

  • Supervise and support EMTs and trainees during emergency medical operations

  • Prepare accurate complete medical-legal documentation of care rendered

Special Working Conditions:
  • Irregular hours rotating and/or night shifts weekend and/or holiday
  • 12-hour work schedule depending on your assigned Branch
  • Must be available to work at all locations on Oahu
  • Required use of safety and protective equipment
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases bodily fluids and hazardous materials
  • Driving under hazardous road traffic and weather conditions
  • Lifting and moving patients under extreme conditions
  • Working in hazardous or unpredictable surroundings.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

The following requirements must be met as of January 31 2026 or as stated:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
1) Graduation from high school; and
2) Completion of an EMT-Paramedic course of training that equals or exceeds the curriculum required to obtain a Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Required at the Time of Application:
Current Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) Certificate (all certifications required to obtain this certificate must be kept current).

The State of Hawaii does not have reciprocity with other States or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. You must meet the licensing requirements set by the State of Hawaii at the time of application. Required Prior to Appointment:
1) Appropriate valid drivers license (automobile/Type 3); and
2) Current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.

All licenses and certifications must be valid at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment. Maintenance of these licenses/certifications and a satisfactory driving record is a condition of employment.

EMPLOYMENT SUITABILITY:
Mobile Emergency Care Specialists (Paramedics)must possess sound moral character integrity and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency medical services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations and must be capable of driving an ambulance safely in response to calls for emergency medical services. If selected the candidates background and driving record will be reviewed to determine the candidates suitability for employment as a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (Paramedic).

To determine employment suitability for the position of Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (Paramedic)the Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions driving records dismissals from employment and separations from military service under other than honorable conditions.

DRIVING RECORD: At the time of the selection interview candidates will be required to submit evidence of a valid motor vehicle license as well as certified copies of official traffic abstracts from each state they have resided in during the last five years.
FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT: Due to the nature of the position selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
