Description of Work

Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer Is in minimum-custody facilities increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

The Correctional Sergeant I position is located at Johnston Correctional Institution in Smithfield NC which houses approximately 668 minimum custody male offenders. work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I in minimum-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or the Correctional Housing unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained and that proper conduct actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.

Gives direction during drills searches and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders their living quarters and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action where appropriate regarding security issues incidents disputes and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing evaluating and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience

To qualify for this position applicants must document on the application that they possess the following:

  • Knowledge of facility operations
  • Knowledge of Prisons policy and procedures

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

The salary grade for this position is NC07 (Salary Range: $35984 - $62971). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
