Job Summary

POSITION OBJECTIVE:


The primary purpose of this position is providing effective oral interpretation services in other languages than English.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)


Interpreting using specialized vocabulary
Maintains confidentiality as legally required with a firm understanding of attorney/client relationships
Maintains professionalism and neutrality providing accurate interpretation while focusing solely on the information being conveyed.
May be required to work extended hours or respond to deadlines with short turnaround time
Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Flexible schedule; able to accommodate interpretation assignments between 7:30 am and 8 pm at the latest

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:


Reports directly to Language Access Coordinator (Welcome Center Department)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):


Required:
Bilingual in English and at least one other language
Preferred:
Previous experience providing interpretation support
Previous experience working with children and/or adults in a learning environment

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):


Interpreter possesses extensive vocabulary in both languages.
Interpreter interprets the message completely and accurately.
Interpreter allows parties to speak for themselves.
Interpreter refrains from interjecting personal opinions.
Interpreter does not engage inside conversations.
Interpreter does not change the registermeaning the level of speech whether very technical or erudite or a childs speech.
Interpreter is courteous and professional.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):


Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills in English and designated language
Ability to convey meaning rather than word-for-word translations.
Ability to accurately convey meaning without editing summarizing adding or omitting meaning using correct grammar and vocabulary
Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
Ability to prioritize and organize work
Possesses strong attention to detail and proofreading skills
Maintains integrity and confidentiality of information obtained
Possesses effective customer service skills as required for the position
Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to work with diverse populations effectively and collaboratively

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts odors chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions and intense noises.

Hourly rate for Interpretation $ 35.00 per hour
Position is in-person
Verification of language proficiency
Completion of required training
