Job Summary

The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated Indigenous and Equity Consultant for Reconciliation and Anti-Racism in the Social Development Branch This role serves as a vital bridge between the City the Branch and the community co-creating solutions to complex problems through meaningful engagement and partnership. You will lead the development and implementation of significant projects and events that advance the Citys commitment to truth reconciliation and anti-racism. By navigating corporate systems and building authentic relationships you will help remove barriers for equity-deserving groups and ensure their voices are central to municipal processes. What will you do

  • Utilize a project management framework to plan and implement inclusive events and gatherings such as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Black History Month
  • Support and at times lead cross-corporate projects to advance the Corporate Anti-Racism Action Plan the Civic Youth Fellowship the MMIWG Action Plan the TRC Municipal Response plan and the Indigenous Framework
  • Act as a subject matter expert and advisor to City leadership on improving processes to be more accessible equitable and inclusive for community partners
  • Coordinate complex cultural protocols honorariums and invitations for senior leadership and City Council
  • Liaise with Indigenous Governments and community-based organizations to support system navigation and access to City resources
  • Develop standardized event management templates and procedures to ensure consistency and excellence across the branch
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences Native Studies Political Sciences Recreation or a related field
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in event and engagement management preferably within a large organization or government setting
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working with Indigenous and inter-cultural communities in community development or project management

Assets:

  • Lived experience with traditional Indigenous communities history culture and current environment. If you are Indigenous we encourage you to self-identify in your application
  • Proven experience in navigating highly politically charged environments with tact and professionalism
  • Demonstrated understanding of UNDRIP the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action and the MMIWG Calls for Justice
  • Demonstrated understanding or lived/living experience with diverse communities in Edmonton
  • Significant understanding of Indigenous and Ethnocultural communities in Edmonton their history culture and current environment. Personal value base compatible with diversity and inclusion principles GBA and human rights advocacy

Skills required for success:

  • Extensive knowledge of project and event planning including developing and implementing complex project with multiple collaborators
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to draft briefings for senior leadership and public presentations
  • Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to nurture positive connections both internally and externally
  • Ability to negotiate and mediate with a high degree of political acumen
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs Sheets Forms)
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( and embracing a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and where appropriate will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance.

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time.
  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust noise light variation vibrations chemicals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states

Salary Range: $49.916 - $62.735 (Hourly); $87939.510 - $110523.390 (Annually)
